Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor DIAMOND BAR - The man found dead on Brea Canyon Road after crashing his Mazda 3 reportedly tried forcing his way into a big rig before dying, the CHP said.
Javier Jose Velasquez Grimaldo, 24, of Rowland Heights, was found lifeless on Brea Canyon Road near the southbound 57 freeway around 4:20 a.m. August 27. Grimaldo was southbound on the 57 freeway in a 2004 Mazda 3 when, for unknown reasons, he veered left, struck the center divider and rolled his vehicle, which came to a rest on the right shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol. Grimaldo exited his vehicle and allegedly tried to force his way into a parked big rig on the right shoulder, the CHP said. The driver of the big rig, an Apple Valley man, fled in fear of his life. The rig, which was still running, began moving with Grimaldo clinging to it. He then either jumped, or fell from the big rig and onto Brea Canyon Road, the CHP said. An autopsy has yet to be performed. The CHP is trying to determine if the body is connected to a collision that occurred around the same time. A vehicle reportedly struck the divider and sped across lanes before rolling down an embankment. The body was discovered around 4:10 a.m., according to Officer Christian Cracraft of the California Highway Patrol. Los Angeles County Firefighters were called to an unknown medical call at the location at 4:20 a.m. Firefighters were told of a body in lanes of traffic, according to Art Marrujo of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Deputies arrested/cited another driver, but for operating a vehicle on a suspended/revoked license and issued a citation to another driver, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Diamond Bar/Walnut Station. The checkpoint will take place in an undisclosed area of town, chosen based on DUI arrests and collision statistics, while simultaneously ensuring officer and public safety, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Diamond Bar Walnut Station. The operation is aimed at curtailing injury and death along streets frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes often occur, deputies said. Deputies will be looking for drivers and motorcycle riders who violate traffic laws. In the last three years, collisions have taken the lives of 1,332 people across Los Angeles County, according to data cited by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “California collision data reveals that primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs by both riders and drivers alike,” deputies said. |
