Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - A pedestrian was found unresponsive and was later declared dead on Atlantic Boulevard near the 60 freeway overpass early Saturday morning.
First responders were dispatched at 1:36 a.m. and found the victim down in the middle of northbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard. The victim appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. It is unclear if a possible suspect vehicle, or driver, has been identified. Any witnesses to the crash is urged to call the Monterey Park Police Department at 626-307-1200. The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 2:08 a.m. April 28. It is not yet clear how the crash occurred, but initially a passerby reported a blacked out vehicle stopped in the middle lanes and an occupant standing outside the vehicle at 2:09 a.m. it is unclear when the person was hit, within an hour, CHP officers were requesting the coroner and that all lanes be shut down, according to CHP traffic logs. The CHP was also told of a vehicle stalled in the HOV lane after possibly hitting the center divider at 2:09 a.m. A person initially believed to be the driver fled to the right shoulder. At 2:35 a.m. all westbound lanes were closed, but by 2:47 a.m. the No. 5 lane was opened. By 5:14 a.m., all lanes were reopened. Police will look for drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians; pedestrians jaywalking, failing to yield to drivers; bicyclists riding against traffic, violating stop signs and signals ... and a whole host of other violations. “In 2018, Monterey Park Police Department has investigated 54 fatal and injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians,” Monterey Park Police said.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising at an alarming rate. In 2016, 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians were killed on California roads. Pedestrian fatalities are up nearly 33 percent from 2012, and the number of bicyclists killed are up nearly 25 percent over the past five years, according to Monterey Park Police. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The man was crossing Atlantic Boulevard mid-block between Garvey and Emerson avenues around 6:41 a.m. when he was struck, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. The driver, a 62-year-old driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Monterey Park Police said. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. The checkpoint, which will be held at an undisclosed area of town, will conclude at 2 a.m. Saturday, June 9. DUI checkpoint locations are chosen, based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests, Monterey Park Police said. Authorities tout the deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints when they are well-publicized and deployed with high-visibility enforcement. “Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely,” Monterey Park Police said in a written statement. The unidentified woman was struck by a vehicle while crossing Garey Avenue just west of Elizabeth Avenue around 9:58 p.m. The driver, a 69-year-old man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash, Monterey Park Police said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. |
