Officers were sent to the 1600 block of South Atlantic Boulevard around 10:08 p.m. March 19. In addition to the damaged vehicle, bullet casings were found in the street and on the sidewalk, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. According to a witness, immediately after the shooting a dark newer-model pickup truck fled the scene north on Atlantic Boulevard. The Monterey Park Police Department does not believe there is an immediate threat to the public. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor MONTEREY PARK - Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has identified the Monterey Park mass shooter as the same man who attempted a shooting in Alhambra and who was found dead inside of a white work van during a traffic stop in Torrance.
Huu Can Tran, 72, was driving in Torrance near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard Sunday morning. Torrance police officers initiated a traffic stop after identifying the van around 10:20 a.m. As officers attempted to approach, a single gunshot was heard, Luna said Sunday afternoon. After a tactical response was initiated to prevent the van from being driven away, Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies opened the van and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 12:52 p.m. Authorities, do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. Investigators recovered several pieces of evidence they said linked Tran to the Alhambra shooting. A weapon was also recovered from the van. Seven victims remain hospitalized. None of the dead have been publicly identified yet. In Alhambra, a city just north of Monterey Park, an Asian male was disarmed of a weapon after he walked in to Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, 121 S. Garfield Ave., about 17 to 20 minutes after the mass shooting. The connection, if any, remains unclear. A white cargo van was seen leaving the area by witnesses. The gunman in Monterey Park is described as an Asian male between 30 and 50 years old. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said this description is preliminary as witnesses gave differing descriptions of a suspect. After receiving a gunfire call at 10:23 p.m., Monterey Park police officers encountered patrons of Star Ballroom Dance Studio, 122 W. Garvey Ave. Some were wounded. Officers entered the building and found more wounded and 10 killed. Authorities said five males and five females were killed inside Star Ballroom. The shooting occurred near, but not at, Lunar New Year celebrations. The FBI has joined the investigation, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services. Monterey Park officers normally off at this time have been called to provide extra patrols in the city, according to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese. President Joseph Biden issued a statement on the shooting. “Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead,” Biden said. “The men and women of the Sheriff’s Department join me in extending our condolences to the countless families affected by this shooting and they will remain constantly in the minds of our investigators. The suspect, who authorities have yet to describe, has still not been arrested. The suspect’s whereabouts are still not known. The shooting reportedly took place inside of a dance studio in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue. It is unclear if the shooter is still at-large. Apparently, witnesses from the scene described that the shooter was carrying some form of a semixautomatic weapon and was carrying additional ammunition with him. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES – An attempted robbery is believed to be what led to a fatal shooting of an off-duty Monterey Park officer August 8.
Carlos Daniel Delcid, 20, faces one count each of murder, attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon with the special circumstance that the murder was committed during a robbery, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. “On August 8, Officer Solorio had just arrived in a Downey parking lot when Delcid allegedly got out of a nearby vehicle and appeared to demand Solorio’s personal items. As Solorio put his car in reverse, the defendant allegedly shot Solorio five times at close range,” according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in a written statement. A 17-year-old driver took Delcid from the scene after the accused gunman re-entered the suspect vehicle. The teen has been filed on in juvenile court for his participation in the crime, according to the DA’s office. Gardiel Solorio, 26, began his field training with the Monterey Park Police Department in July. Delcid is being held without bail in the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He is scheduled for an appearance in the Downey courthouse August 11. Detectives will reportedly share further details about the arrests in an afternoon news conference Wednesday. Gardiel Solorio, 26, was identified by the Monterey Park Police Department. The off-duty officer was found wounded by gunfire inside of his vehicle in the 12000 block of Lakewood Boulevard around 3:25 p.m. in a shopping center outside an L.A. Fitness Gym. Solorio was hired as a police officer recruit January 31, 2022. He attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy as part of Class 460, graduating July 22. Solorio wanted to make an impact on the community and provide a good example for his nephews, according to Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon. The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. The wounded man was taken to an area hospital where he was later declared dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Deputies have yet to explain the reason behind the fatal shooting, But CBS 2 news reported that according to initial information, the man got into an altercation with authorities at a fire station in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. The shooting occurred just before 6:30 p.m. April 5 in a 500 block of West Garvey Avenue. Monterey Park police officers arrived to the scene and found the man and woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victims died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Witnesses believe that the suspect knew the victims and specifically targeted them. The suspect is described as an Asian man in his late 30s or early 40s, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. The shooting occurred around 5:37 p.m. in the 300 block of South Garfield Avenue September 26. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and transported him to County/USC Medical Center where he underwent surgery, according to the Monterey Park Police Department. Officers found and arrested a suspect with a perimeter set by Alhambra Police, Montebello Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. No additional suspects are at large, Monterey Park Police said.
The victim’s condition was not updated Monday morning. A phone call was placed with the Monterey Park Police watch commander Sunday night, but the call was not returned. The suspect has yet to be publicly identified. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor

Surveillance footage helped identify several suspects driving away after the gunfire erupted. April 17, Los Angeles Police officers began pursuing one of the vehicles involved in the shooting. The televised pursuit ended at Hellman Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard in Monterey Park. Four suspects fled the vehicle, but were all found and arrested. Two handguns believed to be used in the April 15 shooting were recovered, Monterey Park Police said. April 18, an additional suspect, 28-year-old Johhny Nguyen, was arrested at his El Monte home around 8 p.m. A vehicle parked at his home was damaged with bullet holes, El Monte Police said. Nguyen was booked on suspicion of identity theft, possession for sales of narcotics, being armed with a firearm while selling narcotics, selling narcotics from a fortified location, conspiracy (street terrorism and illegal gambling) and being a member of a criminal street gang. All nine suspects, who have ties to San Gabriel Valley gangs, are scheduled to appear in Alhambra Superior Court April 30. |
