Huu Can Tran, 72, was driving in Torrance near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard Sunday morning. Torrance police officers initiated a traffic stop after identifying the van around 10:20 a.m. As officers attempted to approach, a single gunshot was heard, Luna said Sunday afternoon. After a tactical response was initiated to prevent the van from being driven away, Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies opened the van and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 12:52 p.m. Authorities, do not believe there are any outstanding suspects. Investigators recovered several pieces of evidence they said linked Tran to the Alhambra shooting. A weapon was also recovered from the van. Seven victims remain hospitalized. None of the dead have been publicly identified yet. In Alhambra, a city just north of Monterey Park, an Asian male was disarmed of a weapon after he walked in to Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, 121 S. Garfield Ave., about 17 to 20 minutes after the mass shooting. The connection, if any, remains unclear. A white cargo van was seen leaving the area by witnesses. The gunman in Monterey Park is described as an Asian male between 30 and 50 years old. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said this description is preliminary as witnesses gave differing descriptions of a suspect. After receiving a gunfire call at 10:23 p.m., Monterey Park police officers encountered patrons of Star Ballroom Dance Studio, 122 W. Garvey Ave. Some were wounded. Officers entered the building and found more wounded and 10 killed. Authorities said five males and five females were killed inside Star Ballroom. The shooting occurred near, but not at, Lunar New Year celebrations. The FBI has joined the investigation, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services. Monterey Park officers normally off at this time have been called to provide extra patrols in the city, according to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese. President Joseph Biden issued a statement on the shooting. “Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead,” Biden said. “The men and women of the Sheriff’s Department join me in extending our condolences to the countless families affected by this shooting and they will remain constantly in the minds of our investigators. The suspect, who authorities have yet to describe, has still not been arrested. The suspect’s whereabouts are still not known. The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. The wounded man was taken to an area hospital where he was later declared dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Deputies have yet to explain the reason behind the fatal shooting, But CBS 2 news reported that according to initial information, the man got into an altercation with authorities at a fire station in the 300 block of Newmark Avenue. The shooting occurred just before 6:30 p.m. April 5 in a 500 block of West Garvey Avenue. Monterey Park police officers arrived to the scene and found the man and woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victims died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Witnesses believe that the suspect knew the victims and specifically targeted them. The suspect is described as an Asian man in his late 30s or early 40s, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. The unidentified suspect surrendered to Monterey Park Police officers outside a home in the 1700 block of Alisar Avenue. Officers found the suspect with his hands up. He was detained without incident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The suspect, only identified as a Hispanic man in his 30s, called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers he killed someone. “When officers entered the residence, they found a female Hispanic in her 60’s with multiple stab wounds to the upper torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Two knives were recovered at the scene. Monterey Park officers responding to a report of a loud music disturbance in the 1100 block of College View Drive January 31 found the victim after another person within the residence told them a dead person was there, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The incident occurred around 5:47 a.m. “The Officers entered the location and observed someone (victim) laying unresponsive on the floor. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau and Burglary-Robbery Task Force witnessed the crime unfold around 1 p.m. somewhere along Floral Drive After seeing a white Mercedes-Benz SUV and silver Chevrolet SUV moving slowly and suspiciously, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Detectives found the Mercedes-Benz parked on Floral Drive and witnessed the driver approach a home and knock on the front door. The driver returned to the his vehicle while two suspects in the Chevy SUV arrived and gained access to the home’s rear yard after no one answered, the Sheriff’s Department said. The two suspects who entered the yard were witnessed exiting the front door of the home. Both vehicles fled the location simultaneously, the Sheriff’s Department said. “Detectives quickly confirmed a burglary had in fact occurred, with a rear window forced open and interior of the home ransacked,” the Sheriff’s Department said. The suspects who burglarized the home and their driver were stopped and arrested by Sheriff’s deputies with assistance from Monterey Park Police.
Detectives recovered stolen jewelry, currency, and a police radio scanner, from within the Chevy SUV, the Sheriff’s Department said. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz SUV fled the area, but was located and arrested in Vernon. Arrested were: The driver of the Chevy SUV, 37-year-old Kevin Green of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of residential burglary. Green has a significant criminal history including arrests for burglary and narcotics violations. He is a previously convicted felon, a documented criminal street gang member, and could face over 20 years in prison if convicted for these new crimes. 40-year-old William Robinson of Los Angeles was previously out of custody on “parole” for burglary. He was booked on suspicion of residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. Robinson has a significant criminal history including arrests for residential burglary and narcotics sales. He has multiple felony convictions and would likely be a “Third Strike” candidate facing life in prison upon additional conviction. He is also a documented South Los Angeles criminal street gang member. Kedrick Daniels, a 42-year-old Los Angeles man, was charged with residential burglary. Daniels has an extensive criminal history including arrests for theft, conspiracy, narcotics and weapons violations. He is facing in excess of 20 years in prison if convicted for this crime. Daniels is a documented Los Angeles criminal street gang member. Driver Frank Tisby, a 32-year-old Los Angeles man, was booked on suspicion of residential burglary. Tisby has a significant criminal history and is a twice-convicted residential burglar. He is facing a “Third Strike” and life in prison if convicted for this charge. Tisby is a documented South Los Angeles criminal street gang member. All suspects are suspected of numerous burglaries throughout Southern California. Sheriff’s detectives and the Monterey Park Police Department both handled the criminal case filing. Three of the suspects appeared in Alhambra Superior Court October 6 and are being held in excess of $1 million bail. A fourth suspect, Green, bonded out. The Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives Detail responded to the 2000 block of South Atlantic Boulevard around 11:30 a.m. January 21. The suspicious item was found behind a store, but Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau did not know which store. The unknown item didn't belong to anyone and it was fixed to a wall, according to Lt. Eric Kim of the Monterey Park Police Department. Ralph's was one of the evacuated stores, Kim said.
