MONTEREY PARK - Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has identified the Monterey Park mass shooter as the same man who attempted a shooting in Alhambra and who was found dead inside of a white work van during a traffic stop in Torrance.

Huu Can Tran, 72, was driving in Torrance near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard Sunday morning. Torrance police officers initiated a traffic stop after identifying the van around 10:20 a.m. As officers attempted to approach, a single gunshot was heard, Luna said Sunday afternoon.

After a tactical response was initiated to prevent the van from being driven away, Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies opened the van and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 12:52 p.m.

Authorities, do not believe there are any outstanding suspects.

Investigators recovered several pieces of evidence they said linked Tran to the Alhambra shooting. A weapon was also recovered from the van.

Seven victims remain hospitalized. None of the dead have been publicly identified yet.

MONTEREY PARK - Authorities provided some details regarding an incident in Alhambra that may be connected to Monterey Park shooting that left 10 dead and 10 wounded.

In Alhambra, a city just north of Monterey Park, an Asian male was disarmed of a weapon after he walked in to Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, 121 S. Garfield Ave., about 17 to 20 minutes after the mass shooting. The connection, if any, remains unclear.

A white cargo van was seen leaving the area by witnesses.

The gunman in Monterey Park is described as an Asian male between 30 and 50 years old. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said this description is preliminary as witnesses gave differing descriptions of a suspect.

After receiving a gunfire call at 10:23 p.m., Monterey Park police officers encountered patrons of Star Ballroom Dance Studio, 122 W. Garvey Ave. Some were wounded. Officers entered the building and found more wounded and 10 killed.

Authorities said five males and five females were killed inside Star Ballroom.

The shooting occurred near, but not at, Lunar New Year celebrations.

The FBI has joined the investigation, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services.

Monterey Park officers normally off at this time have been called to provide extra patrols in the city, according to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese.

President Joseph Biden issued a statement on the shooting.

“Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead,” Biden said.

“The men and women of the Sheriff’s Department join me in extending our condolences to the countless families affected by this shooting and they will remain constantly in the minds of our investigators. I see it in their eyes. They want to get this guy,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to call 323-890-5500. Remain anonymous by calling LA regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), through the P3Tips mobile app, or lacrimestoppers.org.

LOS ANGELES – An attempted robbery is believed to be what led to a fatal shooting of an off-duty Monterey Park officer August 8.

Carlos Daniel Delcid, 20, faces one count each of murder, attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon with the special circumstance that the murder was committed during a robbery, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

“On August 8, Officer Solorio had just arrived in a Downey parking lot when Delcid allegedly got out of a nearby vehicle and appeared to demand Solorio’s personal items. As Solorio put his car in reverse, the defendant allegedly shot Solorio five times at close range,” according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in a written statement.

A 17-year-old driver took Delcid from the scene after the accused gunman re-entered the suspect vehicle.

The teen has been filed on in juvenile court for his participation in the crime, according to the DA’s office.

Gardiel Solorio, 26, began his field training with the Monterey Park Police Department in July.

Delcid is being held without bail in the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He is scheduled for an appearance in the Downey courthouse August 11.
