Cal Poly Pomona Safety Specialist Stabbed to Death is Identified

CLAREMONT - The City of Claremont identified the Cal Poly Pomona public safety specialist who was savagely stabbed to death near campus June 29.

Victorville man Mark Manlapaz, 37, was identified in a post on the City of Claremont Facebook page. Manlapaz was a senior park ranger for Claremont for three years and served Cal Poly Pomona as a public safety specialist for 17 years, according to Claremont  Human Services Director Anne Turner.

“Mark was a friendly, helpful, and dedicated figure in the Claremont Wilderness Park and on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona. He will be greatly missed by his family, co-workers, and the community,” Claremont officials said in the Facebook post.

Manlapaz was providing security at the Campus South property owned by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Friday, June 29 when a suspect approached him and stabbed him several times. Manlapaz died inside his university truck.

The suspect was found near campus and shot dead by Cal Poly Police and Pomona Police.

While Manlapaz was identified by Claremont officials, the Los Angeles County Department of medical Examiner-Coroner will not reveal his name, nor the suspect’s due to a security hold.

A vigil for Manlapaz is scheduled for Thursday, July 5 at Lewis Park, 1700 Danbury Road, in Claremont.
