CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - A man accused of shooting three people during a robbery May 17 and his accomplice are facing a slew of charges. Michael Abeyta, 27, was officially charged with three counts of attempted murder, three counts of second degree robbery, three counts of criminal intent to terrorize and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records. Each count of attempted murder, criminal intent to terrorize and second degree robbery carry a special allegation of use of a firearm. Abeyta is accused of shooting three robbery victims at Super King Market, 436 Auto Center Dr. around 5:11 p.m. All three victims were treated at the scene and later hospitalized and were last listed in stable condition, according to the Claremont Police Department. Witnesses and surveillance video helped officers identify the suspect. During a search, clothing and a firearm believed to be used by the suspect were located hidden under a vehicle at a nearby business. A helicopter found the suspect walking in the 100 block of Meredith Avenue and he was arrested without further incident, according to the Claremont Police Department. The accomplice, 37-year-old Amanda Soto, was identified during the follow-up investigation and arrested. She was charged with three counts of second degree robbery, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. Abeyta is being held without bail. Soto was released on her own recognizance. The woman was found in the vehicle parked at the Murrieta Police Department, 2 Towne Square. First responders were called to the police parking lot just after 10:30 a.m., according to the Claremont Police Department. A suspect, later identified as Claremont man Jeffrey Alexander Calzada, was detained at the scene. Murrieta Police officers learned the homicide occurred in Claremont near Garey Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. Calzada is being held in lieu of $ 2 million bail in the Claremont Police jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court August 16, according to Los Angeles County booking records. The duo are accused of burglarizing Euro Café, 546 E. Baseline Rd. Officers were dispatched at 2:47 a.m. and after arriving 30 seconds later, saw a suspect flee the business and into a waiting black Jeep SUV, according to the Claremont Police Department. An officer attempted to block the driver from escaping, but the driver used the Jeep SUV, later determined stolen in Ontario, to ram the patrol vehicle, according to the Claremont Police Department. While being pursued by officers, the driver and passenger fled onto Baseline Road without headlights and soon entered the eastbound 210 freeway in opposing lanes of traffic. Officers cancelled the pursuit due to the driver’s reckless nature, according to the Claremont Police Department. “While checking the IS-210 freeway for the suspect vehicle, an officer located a traffic collision on the freeway, west of Fruit Street, involving the suspect vehicle and another vehicle. It was determined that the suspect vehicle was unoccupied, and officers responded to the area to search for the suspects,” according to the Claremont Police Department in a written statement. One suspect was caught hiding in some bushes. A Claremont Police K9 arrived and sniffed out the second suspect who was also hiding in some bushes along the right shoulder. Officers found in the Jeep SUV three cash registers, one reportedly taken from Euro Café, according to the Claremont Police Department. Dejon Butler, 19, was booked on suspicion of burglary, felony evading, evading while driving the wrong way, grand theft auto, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail ahead of a scheduled court appearance October 20. The 17-year-old was booked on suspicion of burglary, resisting arrest and was later released to the custody of the group facility on a citation to appear in court, according to the Claremont Police Department. The La Verne Police Department and a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Helicopter assisted with the search. John Dehaseth attempted to flee through the rear door of his home in the 1500 block of Mural Drive August 27 as detectives from the Claremont Police Department, aided by the Claremont police drug detection canine, closed in on the suspect at his home. He was detained and placed into custody, the Claremont Police Department said. The arrest came as a result from months of investigation after a victim came forward March 23. Officers responded to the 1500 block of mural Drive. A 38-year-old woman told police she was drugged and sexually assaulted by the suspect inside his nearby home, Claremont Police said. “During months of continuous investigation, evidence was located, which corroborated the victim’s statement,” Claremont Police said in a written statement. After the arrest Thursday, police confiscated evidence related to the assault inside the suspects home. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - A known sex registrant and transient was jailed Thursday, accused of making inappropriate sexual comments to a juvenile. Javier Sanchez, 26, was arrested within minutes of a warrant being issued for his arrest in connection with the child annoying case that occurred in November, according to the Claremont Police Department. A girl was approached by a man near Indian Hill Boulevard and First Street November 27. “The victim stated that the male adult made inappropriate sexual comments to her. The suspect had left the area prior to the officer’s arrival,” Claremont Police said. Investigators believed they knew the suspect’s identity based on the victim’s description, thinking Sanchez was the man who approached the girl. Sanchez frequents the Claremont Village area. Sanchez was held in lieu of $100,000 bail and was scheduled for a December 6 appearance in Pomona Superior Court.
Sanchez was previously arrested November 21 -- six days before the child annoying incident and accused of lewd acts at the Claremont Helen Renwick Library. He pleaded guilty in the library case, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but was released after one day due to overcrowding in the county jail, Claremont Police said. Investigators released Sanchez’s booking photo in hopes of encouraging more victims to step forward. Anyone with information on Sanchez is urged to call Claremont Police at 909-399-5411. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor CLAREMONT - A Montclair man who spent time as a band coach at Claremont High School was caught September 11 after attempting to meet a teen boy. Daniel Gonzalez, 25, was arrested in Claremont after attempting to rendezvous with the 17-year-old boy whom he is accused of having an “inappropriate relationship” with, according to the Claremont Police Department. The boy and Gonzalez met while the latter was employed as a band coach, a job he last worked during the 2017-2018 school year. Gonzalez was to meet the boy somewhere in Claremont at 5:30 p.m. September 11, but instead was met by Claremont Police and a pair of handcuffs.
Police learned of the inappropriate meeting and molestation allegations September 2. Gonzalez posted $100,000 bail after being booked on suspicion of child abuse and contact with a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, Claremont Police said. Gonzalez is scheduled for an appearance in Pomona Superior Court October 10. |
