Police attempted to stop a driver behind the wheel of a car without license plates in the 1200 block of North Azusa Avenue around 7:15 p.m., but the driver refused to stop, according to Sgt. Joshua Turner of the Covina Police Department. The driver led police through a parking lot, through surface streets and onto the 210 freeway where the chase headed east, Turner said. With a police helicopter and media helicopters overhead, the pursuit sped along through the 210, 15, and 91 freeways, ending up on surface streets in the Corona/Riverside area. The California Highway Patrol and a Sheriff’s helicopter aided Covina officers as they used the Pursuit Intervention Technique to disable the vehicle at La Sierra and Indiana avenues in Riverside. At least two suspect surrendered to officers. Written by AARON CASTREJON | CityWatch Editor COVINA - A 13-year-old boy was reportedly the target of a robbery attempt Thursday morning, police said.
The boy was walking in the area of Barranca Avenue and Puente Street around 10:30 a.m. October 18 when an unknown suspect came up from behind and grabbed at the backpack he was wearing, according to Sgt. Mike Robison of the Covina Police Department. The boy never looked back at the suspect. A description was not obtained, said Sgt. David Rodriguez of the Covina Police Department. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. The boy, a student of nearby Sierra Vista Middle School, was uninjured. The suspect who grabbed at the backpack didn't use excessive force, but simply pulled at the backpack, Robison said. There were apparently no witnesses to the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call the Covina Police Department at 626-384-5995. Police were called to the high school, 1016 Cypress St., around 2:08 p.m. The student made “an unacceptable comment about a firearm,” according to Sgt. John Zumwalt of the Covina Police Department. Police were told that a student might possibly be in possession of a gun on campus. Police and Covina detectives arrived and Northview was placed on lock down. Police arrived in force and determined that the statement was a prank, Zumwalt said. “A minor in question was contacted, a classroom was cleared, a student was detained. No gun was located,” Zumwalt said. The student was taken into custody. The suspect, 45-year-old Carlos Janacua, fled the Home Depot, 963 Badillo St., and officers attempted to perform a traffic stop after locating him the afternoon of September 30, according to Sgt. Dan Regan of the Covina Police Department. The pursuit began around 4:15 p.m. after officers were called by a citizen regarding a theft in progress. Janacua evaded police until he crashed into a parked vehicle near Covina District Field, 200 W. Puente St. Janauca was booked on suspicion of receiving stolen property, felony reckless evading, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Janacua also had several warrants, according to Sgt. Dan Regan of the Covina Police Department. Janacua is scheduled to appear in Citrus Municipal Court today, October 1. |
