COVINA - A family was home Tuesday night when to men armed with a crowbar, brass knuckles and a handgun attempted to enter a home.
The men approached the door around 9:15 p.m.
Inside the home, a husband, pregnant wife and their 6-year-old boy were inside.
The resident’s were alerted to the men when their iRing security camera notified them of activity at the door, Covina Police said.
The would-be robbers knew to call out one of the resident’s names since it appeared on a vehicle decal outside, Covina Police said. The husband waited behind the front door, a gun in hand, while his wife called police. The suspects left in a white panel van fixed with a black license plate. Fernando Alvarado, 53, was arrested after he was recognized by both the children he is accused of threatening and by Covina Police December 18. The incident occurred just after school hours at the corner of Barranca Avenue and Rowland Street. Alvarado is accused of approaching the children and displaying a knife, according to an email sent by the Covina Valley Unified School District. It is not clear what Alvarado said to the children. The children ran into a nearby 7-Eleven store and notified police and school officials. After-school programs for nearby Barranca Elementary School and Sierra Vista Middle School were placed on lockdown during the search, Covina Valley Unified officials said. Arriving Covina Police used a photograph to aid in their search of a suspect. A Covina officer recognized the suspect, even after the suspect allegedly changed clothes to avoid capture, according to Lt. Dan Regan of the Covina Police Department. Alvarado was booked on suspicion of brandishing a weapon and making criminal threats, Regan said. Alvarado is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles as he awaits a scheduled appearance in Citrus Municipal Court December 20. Cristobal Duran, 31, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His city of residence was not available. The crash occurred just after midnight December 7. Duran was killed when the driver of a Honda jumped a curb on eastbound Arrow Highway and struck a power pole. Duran was either sitting or standing near the pole and was killed, according to Lt. Trevor Gaumer of the Covina Police Department. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. “Speed may have been [a factor]. There were some witnesses that believe the car was travelling at an unsafe speed, probably due to the rainy conditions,” Gaumer said. It was unclear how many customers were affected by power loss. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A male pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle that hit a curb and destroyed a power pole on Arrow Highway Friday morning.
The victim killed was either standing or sitting on the sidewalk on eastbound Arrow Highway at Arrow Grand Circle when the driver of a vehicle lost control, jumped the curb struck the pedestrian and knocked down the pole, according to Covina Police Lieutenant Trevor Gaumer. The crash occurred just after midnight. Investigators do not believe alcohol, drugs or distracted driving were factors in the crash, Gaumer said. “Speed may have been [a factor]. There were some witnesses that believe the car was travelling at an unsafe speed, probably due to the rainy conditions,” Gaumer said. It was unclear how many customers were affected by power loss.
