CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police successfully arrested a man who is accused of threatening family members and firing off a shotgun inside a home October 27. A woman called and claimed her boyfriend, identified at 42-year-old Edwin Maldonado Alicea, was drunk and belligerent. During the call with Covina dispatchers, a shotgun blast was heard over the phone. Dispatchers determined that the suspect had a shotgun, rifle and pistols registered to him, according Covina Police radio recordings. Police arrived and surrounded the home. All occupants were able to safely escape to waiting officers. The suspect allegedly refused to surrender, setting off a lengthy barricade. SWAT officers made use of exterior and interior drones to get eyes on the suspect while a K9 assisted with a search. Maldonado eventually surrendered. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm on a person, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and threats of violence, according to Covina Police booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The county medical examiner named the woman gunned down at the storage facility she worked at as detectives announced the arrest of a suspect. Patricia Villa, a 44-year-old Alhambra resident, was found at One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., by family members who went looking for her. Surveillance video reportedly indicated Villa was shot around 5:30 p.m. November 2, according to the Covina Police Department. Villa was found around 12:30 a.m. Monday. Investigators identified Juan Nava, 66, as a suspect. A search warrant was served at his home November 3 and he was arrested, according to the Covina Police Department. The shooting allegedly stemmed from Nava’s claims of property being burglarized from his storage unit, a claim he also made in December 2023. Nava allegedly grew angry that Villa apparently did not believe him, according to the Covina Police Department. Police seized assault weapons and ammunition from Nava’s home. Nava was officially charged with one count of murder, three counts of possessing an assault weapon, and special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.
Nava is being held without bail at the north County Correctional Facility in Castaic. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police detectives are determining what led to the shooting death of a woman whose body was found at a storage facility Sunday afternoon. Police were called to One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., around 5:45 p.m. The woman was found inside the facility and declared dead., according to the Covina Police Department. It is not publicly clear if she was found inside a storage unit, or elsewhere on the property. Police have yet to reveal if a suspect is being sought. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Investigators remain at the scene of a shooting that took the life of one teenager Saturday night. The victim, described as a 16-year-old, died after being taken to a hospital. It is not immediately clear if a suspect has been identified or is in custody. Police arrived to the 600 block of East Camellia Drive around 10:22 p.m. on reports of gunfire August 16. Partygoers were seen running in the street. A weapon was reportedly discovered discarded in the street. It is unclear if anyone else was injured. The event was described by partygoers as a “back-to-school pool party.” A mutual aid response was requested with officers from West Covina and Glendora Police assisting at the crime scene. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Detectives are still looking for the gunman who wounded an adversary during a verbal argument at an apartment complex Sunday night. It is not known what the two men were arguing over, but one of the men produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds, hitting his adversary at least once in the abdomen, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Covina Police Department. The victim’s wounds are not considered life-threatening, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. Officers were called to the 1100 block of East Wanamaker Drive at 9:16 p.m. Sunday, July 13. Detectives do know that the victim is a resident of the apartment complex, but it is not immediately clear if the suspect also lives there too. The suspect fled after the shooting, but it is unclear if he escaped in a vehicle, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A driver hobbled away from his vehicle after being shot twice during a road rage chase through Covina streets Sunday. It is not yet clear to investigators if the victim and shooter know each other, but the whole ordeal started around 6 p.m., June 29. For reasons, not yet publicly clear, both drivers were chasing each other around the city on surface streets. At some point, one of the drivers fired at least six shots at the other driver’s vehicle in the area of Glendora Avenue and Badillo Street near Royal Oak Middle School, according to Sgt. Lee of the Covina Police Department. “[The bullets] went through the passenger side door and hit the driver in the leg twice. Nothing fatal,” Lee told SGV CityWatch. First responders were called regarding the shooting by some bystanders around 6:40 p.m. after the victim hobbled to an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East Badillo Street, not too far from the shooting. Lee was hesitant to reveal any description of the suspect vehicle or the shooter. He noted that there was possibly only one person inside the suspect vehicle at the time of the shooting. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man was arrested Friday after reportedly firing a rifle into an apartment unit occupied by a family. The suspect, 48-year-old Juan Gerardo Gonzalez, shot into the apartment unit in the 800 block of West Glentana Street around 6:52 p.m. Thursday. The mother, father and two children within the unit were able to flee through a second-story window, according to the Covina Police Department. No one was injured. A resident spoke with CityWatch and said around eight to 10 rounds were fired into the victims’ door. “Family escaped through a window with the help of a neighbor with a ladder,” the resident said, adding “[the suspect] is a new neighbor just out of prison.” As officers arrived to the apartment, Gonzalez fled in a vehicle, leading officers on a pursuit onto the westbound 210 freeway and south on the 605 where, due to Gonzalez’s reckless driving, they lost sight of him, according to the Covina Police Department. West Covina Police officers located Gonzalez in his vehicle, performed a high-risk traffic stop and detained him until detectives took him into custody, according to the Covina Police Department. Gonzalez was arrested at 12:14 a.m. Friday and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and other felony charges. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Investigators released a sketch of a suspect wanted for shooting and murdering a man in front of his wife and three children June 22. The man was shot and wounded in front of his wife, 11 year-old daughter and two 9-year-old twin boys in the 1100 block of East Wanamaker Avenue. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment and later died, according to the Covina Police Department. The 28-year-old man and his family were out walking around 9:35 p.m. The suspect, only described as a Latino man age 20 to 25 years old, walked in between the man and his wife. A verbal confrontation and sued and the man was shot in the chest twice, according to the Covina Police Department. The suspect fled the area on foot. He is further described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and having a thin build. Anyone with information that may help identify the suspect is urged to call Detective Preciado at 626-384-5622. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - Three people were transported to a trauma center Saturday morning after a shooting occurred at a bar.
The shooting occurred at Katie Jakes Bar and Grill, 750 Terrado Plaza, Saturday, May 11. First responders were sent to the bar around 2 a.m. The Covina Police Department summoned firefighters to the bar to treat and transport patients, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Bernard Peters. It is unclear how many of the three people transported were wounded by gunfire. The extent of injuries is not immediately known. A Covina Police supervisor has not yet returned a request for information on the shooting. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A deputies suspicions were spot on August 31 after detaining a man seen acting suspiciously inside of a vehicle, parked outside a Starbucks in unincorporated Covina.
The vehicle was spotted at the Starbucks at Citrus Avenue and Arrow Highway. During a check of the vehicle license plate, the deputy discovered the driver was wanted on suspicion of murder, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. After the deputy and made a request for additional assistance, the driver was taken into custody without incident. Sidney Clarke, a 28-year-old Brea resident, is accused of gunning down 21-year-old Logan Kahmar August 30. The shooting took place in a residence at 650 N. Tamarack Ave. Evidence led investigators to pin Clarke as a suspect, according to the Brea Police Department. Brea police detectives reportedly found additional evidence linking Clarke to the murder. Clarke is being held in lieu of $1 million bail in the Orange County Jail. |
