Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The county medical examiner named the woman gunned down at the storage facility she worked at as detectives announced the arrest of a suspect. Patricia Villa, a 44-year-old Alhambra resident, was found at One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., by family members who went looking for her. Surveillance video reportedly indicated Villa was shot around 5:30 p.m. November 2, according to the Covina Police Department. Villa was found around 12:30 a.m. Monday. Investigators identified Juan Nava, 66, as a suspect. A search warrant was served at his home November 3 and he was arrested, according to the Covina Police Department. The shooting allegedly stemmed from Nava’s claims of property being burglarized from his storage unit, a claim he also made in December 2023. Nava allegedly grew angry that Villa apparently did not believe him, according to the Covina Police Department. Police seized assault weapons and ammunition from Nava’s home. Nava was officially charged with one count of murder, three counts of possessing an assault weapon, and special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.
Nava is being held without bail at the north County Correctional Facility in Castaic. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police detectives are determining what led to the shooting death of a woman whose body was found at a storage facility Sunday afternoon. Police were called to One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., around 5:45 p.m. The woman was found inside the facility and declared dead., according to the Covina Police Department. It is not publicly clear if she was found inside a storage unit, or elsewhere on the property. Police have yet to reveal if a suspect is being sought. CityWatch Editor COVINA - An alleged DUI driver and his passenger were arrested September 3, allegedly attempting to escape the long arm of the law. Covina officers attempted a traffic stop on the driver of a 2019 Honda Accord near Arrow Highway and Bonnie Cove Avenue for traffic violations, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Covina Police Department. The driver entered an apartment complex to ditch the fuzz. Then the pursuit initiated. The driver fled at 20 miles per hour above the posted speed limit and used evasive maneuvers to evade arrest, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. The pursuit ended with a suspect search in two neighborhoods near Superior Grocers at the dead ends of West Bygrove Street and West Gragmont Street. Gabriel Espinoza, 38, was booked on suspicion of evading a peace officer, driving under the influence and delaying a peace officer. He was issued a citation and released, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Also arrested was Melissa Calderon, 38, booked on suspicion of delaying an officer and public intoxication. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Investigators remain at the scene of a shooting that took the life of one teenager Saturday night. The victim, described as a 16-year-old, died after being taken to a hospital. It is not immediately clear if a suspect has been identified or is in custody. Police arrived to the 600 block of East Camellia Drive around 10:22 p.m. on reports of gunfire August 16. Partygoers were seen running in the street. A weapon was reportedly discovered discarded in the street. It is unclear if anyone else was injured. The event was described by partygoers as a “back-to-school pool party.” A mutual aid response was requested with officers from West Covina and Glendora Police assisting at the crime scene. CityWatch Editor COVINA - The driver behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle led officers on a pursuit August 7. A notification was sent of a stolen vehicle entering Covina city limits at 7:18 p.m. Officers found the car at East Badillo Street and North Glendora Avenue, according to the Covina Police Department. The suspect refused to stop and fled into the City of Glendora. The driver struck another vehicle and slammed into a cinder block wall at South Glendora Avenue and West Ronwood Street just north of the 210 freeway. Both suspect and passenger were arrested. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Detectives are still looking for the gunman who wounded an adversary during a verbal argument at an apartment complex Sunday night. It is not known what the two men were arguing over, but one of the men produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds, hitting his adversary at least once in the abdomen, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Covina Police Department. The victim’s wounds are not considered life-threatening, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. Officers were called to the 1100 block of East Wanamaker Drive at 9:16 p.m. Sunday, July 13. Detectives do know that the victim is a resident of the apartment complex, but it is not immediately clear if the suspect also lives there too. The suspect fled after the shooting, but it is unclear if he escaped in a vehicle, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A driver hobbled away from his vehicle after being shot twice during a road rage chase through Covina streets Sunday. It is not yet clear to investigators if the victim and shooter know each other, but the whole ordeal started around 6 p.m., June 29. For reasons, not yet publicly clear, both drivers were chasing each other around the city on surface streets. At some point, one of the drivers fired at least six shots at the other driver’s vehicle in the area of Glendora Avenue and Badillo Street near Royal Oak Middle School, according to Sgt. Lee of the Covina Police Department. “[The bullets] went through the passenger side door and hit the driver in the leg twice. Nothing fatal,” Lee told SGV CityWatch. First responders were called regarding the shooting by some bystanders around 6:40 p.m. after the victim hobbled to an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East Badillo Street, not too far from the shooting. Lee was hesitant to reveal any description of the suspect vehicle or the shooter. He noted that there was possibly only one person inside the suspect vehicle at the time of the shooting. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Residents have been displaced, but uninjured in an apartment fire Monday. As many as 25 units are affected by the fire that burned at 1375 W. San Bernardino Rd., according to the Covina Police Department. Los Angeles County firefighters were dispatched just after 9:30 a.m. The fire was soon upgraded to a 2nd-alarm response, doubling resources at the scene. The fire was eventually upgraded to a 3rd-alarm within 30 minutes, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Flames were knocked down around 10:57 a.m. The West Covina Fire Department and West Covina Police Department assisted at the scene. It is unclear if a cause has been determined. Investigators with LA County Fire are on scene. Residents affected by the San Bernardino Road apartment fire in Covina are being evacuated to Covina Park recreation hall, 340 N. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Two women are facing child endangerment charges, accused of driving recklessly while arguing with each other on city streets. An officer on patrol witnessed the acrobatics in the 100 block of East Badillo Street around 5:20 p.m. March 8. The drivers were caught on camera as the drivers chased each other while performing 360-degree turns, speeding and nearly colliding into other vehicles. “Both vehicles were stopped and found to have small children in vehicles. Each driver was arrested for child endangerment,” according to the Covina Police Department. Tencha Nieves, a 28-year-old Pomona woman, and Ashley Bates, a 29-year-old Azusa woman, were arrested. Both women were officially charged with one count each of willful cruelty to a child, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. Both women appeared in West Covina Superior Court March 11 and each pleaded not guilty to the charges. CityWatch Editor COVINA - An ex-substitute teacher was arrested March 5, accused of unlawful sex acts with a minor. Christopher Michael Confair, 34, was a substitute teacher from 2021 to 2025 in the Covina-Valley Unified School District. He also served as a boys basketball coach at Northview High School. He was set to appear in court Friday, March 7, but posted bond the day of his arrest, according to Los Angeles County booking records. It is not yet publicly clear when the alleged acts took place, nor how many victims there may be, but Covina Police investigators said the victims range from middle school to high school.
