Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The county medical examiner named the woman gunned down at the storage facility she worked at as detectives announced the arrest of a suspect. Patricia Villa, a 44-year-old Alhambra resident, was found at One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., by family members who went looking for her. Surveillance video reportedly indicated Villa was shot around 5:30 p.m. November 2, according to the Covina Police Department. Villa was found around 12:30 a.m. Monday. Investigators identified Juan Nava, 66, as a suspect. A search warrant was served at his home November 3 and he was arrested, according to the Covina Police Department. The shooting allegedly stemmed from Nava’s claims of property being burglarized from his storage unit, a claim he also made in December 2023. Nava allegedly grew angry that Villa apparently did not believe him, according to the Covina Police Department. Police seized assault weapons and ammunition from Nava’s home. Nava was officially charged with one count of murder, three counts of possessing an assault weapon, and special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.
Nava is being held without bail at the north County Correctional Facility in Castaic. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police detectives are determining what led to the shooting death of a woman whose body was found at a storage facility Sunday afternoon. Police were called to One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., around 5:45 p.m. The woman was found inside the facility and declared dead., according to the Covina Police Department. It is not publicly clear if she was found inside a storage unit, or elsewhere on the property. Police have yet to reveal if a suspect is being sought. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Investigators remain at the scene of a shooting that took the life of one teenager Saturday night. The victim, described as a 16-year-old, died after being taken to a hospital. It is not immediately clear if a suspect has been identified or is in custody. Police arrived to the 600 block of East Camellia Drive around 10:22 p.m. on reports of gunfire August 16. Partygoers were seen running in the street. A weapon was reportedly discovered discarded in the street. It is unclear if anyone else was injured. The event was described by partygoers as a “back-to-school pool party.” A mutual aid response was requested with officers from West Covina and Glendora Police assisting at the crime scene. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man reportedly took his own life Thursday after a disturbance inside a home. A family member got into a struggle with the man who expressed suicidal desires in an attempt to dissuade him. No one else was killed or injured, according to Lt. Ryan Davis of the Covina Police Department. The incident unfolded on East Grovecenter Street west of South Starglen Drive. First responders were called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. The family member fled the home after struggling with the suicidal man. Members of the Covina Police Department SWAT team arrived to attempt to de-escalate the situation. A handgun was used, Davis told SGV CityWatch. As of 12:30 p.m., officers remained on scene awaiting the arrival of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man said to be in his 60s died inside a Home Depot Wednesday morning. Police do not suspect foul play. First responders were called to the Home Depot, 963 W. CityWatch Editor COVINA - The Azusa Unified School District confirmed a student was the bicyclist struck and killed by a vehicle Monday morning. “We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of one of our high school students. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and the entire community during this difficult time. In response, we have made counseling services available to students and staff as we come together to grieve and support one another,” according to the Azusa Unified School District in a written statement. The crash took place just before 7:30 a.m. on Monday, September 30 in the 1000 block of West Cypress Street near Northview High School. First responders found an unresponsive male bicyclist and attempted to revive him. He was declared deceased at the scene, according to Lt. Turner of the Covina Police Department. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. No arrests have been made, Turner told SGV CityWatch. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has yet to identify the juvenile. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Traffic investigators are still on scene of a fatal crash involving a vehicle and bicyclist that took place Monday morning. The crash took place just before 7:30 a.m. on Monday, September 30 in the 1000 block of West Cypress Street near Homerest Avenue. First responders found an unresponsive male bicyclist and attempted to revive him. He was declared deceased at the scene, according to Lt. Turner of the Covina Police Department. Turner declined to state whether the bicyclist was adult or juvenile. The crash occurred near Northview High School. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A motorcyclist died Saturday after colliding with a vehicle on Grand Avenue. The motorcyclist was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics and transported to a hospital where the rider was declared deceased, according to Lt. Anthony Zavala of the Covina Police Department. First responders were called around 5:18 p.m., September 21 to Grand Avenue just south of Arrow Highway. The driver remained at the scene and is speaking with investigators. There is no suspicion at this time of DUI, Zavala told SGV CityWatch. Both north and southbound lanes of Grand Avenue between Cienega Avenue and Arrow Highway are expected to remain closed for several more hours. Written by AARON CASTREJON
CityWatch Editor COVINA - Investigators released a sketch of a suspect wanted for shooting and murdering a man in front of his wife and three children June 22. The man was shot and wounded in front of his wife, 11 year-old daughter and two 9-year-old twin boys in the 1100 block of East Wanamaker Avenue. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment and later died, according to the Covina Police Department. The 28-year-old man and his family were out walking around 9:35 p.m. The suspect, only described as a Latino man age 20 to 25 years old, walked in between the man and his wife. A verbal confrontation and sued and the man was shot in the chest twice, according to the Covina Police Department. The suspect fled the area on foot. He is further described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and having a thin build. Anyone with information that may help identify the suspect is urged to call Detective Preciado at 626-384-5622. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - East and west traffic on Covina Boulevard remains closed between North Prospero Drive and North Barranca Avenue after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash with an SUV Tuesday.
Preliminarily the motorcyclist, a 63-year-old Glendora resident, was eastbound on Covina Boulevard and collided with an SUV driven by a 65-year-old San Gabriel resident who was westbound and turning south onto Grandview Avenue, according to Sgt. Marquez of the Covina Police Department. First responders were sent to the scene around 6:38 p.m. February 27. The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. The SUV driver remained at the scene and is speaking with investigators. DUI is not expected to play a factor in the crash, Marquez told SGV CityWatch. |
