CityWatch Editor COVINA - Four juveniles took to the sewers in a desperate, yet failed attempt to outrun police January 14. The teens first robbed a convenience store in the 1000 block of North Citrus Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. One of the teens jumped the counter and flashed a handgun, according to the Covina Police Department. The same group reportedly robbed a convenience store roughly 20 minutes later in the 500 block of South Azusa Avenue. Officers located the suspect vehicle, but the driver refused to stop, according to the Azusa Police Department. The juveniles ended the pursuit in Arcadia and fled the vehicle, which officers later discovered was stolen. The juveniles fled into a flood control channel, leading to an underground search with the help of Covina Police K9 Diego who, according to police bodycam video, sunk his fangs into one of the juveniles. A handgun was recovered, according to Covina Police. Assisting with the search were the Arcadia Police Department, Irwindale Police Department and Foothill Special Enforcement Team. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA – A West Covina man was arrested May 25, identified as the suspect who threatened a video game store employee with a knife and stole cash and gaming consoles.
London Paige Leones, 22, was booked on suspicion of robbery. The crime took place around 2:09 p.m. at 1Up Video Games, 111 N. Citrus Ave. May 15, according to the Covina Police Department. “The suspect … held a knife up to a store employee and demanded money. Fearing for his life, the employee complied and Leones took approximately $450 from the cash register, as well as a Playstation 5, and two Gameboy Advances,” according to the Covina Police Department in a written statement. A search warrant served at Leones’ West Covina home reportedly revealed the stolen gaming devices, weapon and clothing related to the crime, according to the Covina Police Department. Leones was released on bond. He is scheduled to appear in the West Covina courthouse Thursday, June 9. A passerby saw an armed suspect point a handgun at a woman around 10:40 a.m. February 1. The suspect reached into the victim’s sweater pocket and take a cell phone, according to the Covina Police Department. Officers searched the area after the witness called 911. A suspect was detained nearby in the 300 block of West Badillo Street and the suspect ran from officers. He jumped over fences until reaching an apartment complex, Covina Police said. The suspect walked out of the complex after officers established a containment. The suspect ran again and into Covina Park where people were exercising and was detained. A loaded clip for a 9mm handgun was seized from the suspect, Covina Police said. An El Monte K9 assisted with a weapon search and a handgun was found near some bushes. A witness helped Covina officers identify the suspect, 18-year-old Angel Vasquez of Baldwin Park. He was booked on suspicion of possessing narcotics while armed with a firearm, resisting arrest, evading or obstructing police and misappropriation of found property. Covina Home Invasion Robbers Caught Trying To Take Cash Stolen From Rowland Heights Dispensary12/3/2020 Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - Two men armed with weapons and suited in tactical gear were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly forced their way into a Covina home to try and take back $6,000 stolen by the resident who allegedly took it from the dispensary he was fired from, police said. Shannon Hunter and James Harper were located in a vehicle as they fled scene. The men were allegedly hired by the owner of a Rowland Heights marijuana dispensary who sought to take back the stolen cash, according to the Covina Police Department. The home invasion robbery occurred in the 600 block of South Calvados Street around 11:38 p.m. The suspects fled before police arrived.
The suspects were found during an area search. After detaining the suspects, officers saw Hunter and Harper had marked “security” clothing, badges, tactical vests and weapons, both real and replica, Covina Police said. “The victim went to the dispensary to collect their final paycheck, and also stole approximately $6,000 from the business while there. The business owner sent Harper and Hunter, posing as security guards, to recover the stolen money,” Covina Police said in a written statement. Hunter is a prior convicted felon and was also charged for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The crimes occurred along the Arrow Highway and Azusa Avenue area. The investigation led police to name Jermie Schaviers, 37, as the armed and dangerous suspect, according to the Covina Police Department. Most recently, Schaviers robbed a Harbor Freight Tools, 440 W. Arrow Hwy., and Auto Zone, 1445 N. Citrus Ave. Police located Schaviers who attempted to flee in a vehicle, but he was arrested during a high-risk traffic stop, Covina Police said. Schaviers, a Covina man, has an extensive criminal history and is on active probation, Covina Police said. Schaviers is being held in lieu of $190,000 at the Men’s Central Jail in Downtown Los Angeles. He is scheduled for a court appearance April 2.

COVINA – A one-minute video was released Thursday of the strange events that led to a robbery and attempted murder during a Covina fistfight.
L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers posted the March 23 video of a fistfight in the 1900 block of East Cienega Avenue. A man forcefully took a necklace from the witness of an unrelated fight around 6:30 p.m. The men fighting and the robbery victim reportedly do not know the armed robber, according to the Covina Police Department. The suspect pulled up to the fight in an SUV, exited and forcefully stole a necklace from the neck of the witness, Covina Police said. The robbery victim and the two people fighting ran after the robbery suspect and began fighting him as he ran back to the SUV. He withdrew a black handgun and fired twice, striking the victim in an arm, according to the Covina Police Department.

The SUV fled east on Cienega Avenue to southbound Sunflower Avenue. The gunman should still be considered armed and dangerous. Christian David Camacho, a 23-year-old Covina man, was arrested outside his home without incident just before 5 a.m. January 22. He was booked on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder, according to the Covina Police Department. Investigators said Camacho stabbed the victim who also possibly suffered a collapsed lung. He is expected to survive his wounds. Camacho had injuries consistent with the crime, Covina Police said. 21-year-old Jacob Cannon, also a Covina man, was arrested after he falsified a report of being attacked in Azusa -- mere minutes after officers responded to a call of a stabbing victim outside In N Out, 1310 N. Grand Ave., January 21 around 11:50 p.m. Camacho and Cannon exited their compact car and attempted to rob their victim as he rode a bicycle. Cannon somehow received a stab wound during the crime, Covina Police said. “The victim smashed the rear window of the vehicle as both suspects fled in it with the victim’s hat” Covina Police said, adding that “officers noticed Cannon’s vehicle’s rear window was smashed out and matched the suspect vehicle description from the robbery on Grand Ave. Cannon was determined to be one of the suspect’s in the initial robbery and was wounded during crime.”
Cannon was also booked on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder. A search warrant was served at Camacho’s home. Evidence in the stabbing was discovered, Covina Police said. Camacho and Cannon are being held in lieu of $2 million in the Covina Police jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in West Covina Superior Court January 24. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man accused of stabbing his robbery victim multiple times was jailed after being found with a torso wound he accidentally gave himself, police said. 21-year-old suspect Jacob Alan Cannon of Covina was found at a residence in the 400 block of East Alisal Way minutes after the victim was found. Police responded after he called and lied about being attacked in Azusa, according to Sgt. Rodriguez of the Covina Police Department. The attempted robbery occurred around 11:50 p.m. January 21 in the southbound lanes of Grand Avenue near the In N Out driveway, Rodriguez. Police determined that Cannon’s story made no sense after and he and his victim were admitted to the same hospital. They determined Cannon was the suspect in the stabbing near In N Out, 1371 Grand Ave. The victim fought against the suspect who likely accidentally stabbed himself during the robbery.
Cannon was able to get away with nothing more than a hat, Rodriguez said. The victim received multiple stab wounds and possibly a collapsed lung, but will survive his wounds, Rodriguez told SGV CityWatch. Cannon faces robbery and assault with a deadly weapon charges, Rodriguez said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA (County) - Four men made off with another man’s cell phone Sunday afternoon after one suspect brandished a handgun. The incident occurred near North Conwell Avenue and East Brookport Street in unincorporated Covina around 4:30 p.m. March 24. The victim claimed he was followed by the suspects in a vehicle. Two of the suspects approached him and demanded his cell phone, according to Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station. A struggle began between the suspects and the victim. The driver then approached the victim and pointed a handgun at him, Sachs said.
The armed suspect took the phone after demanding it from the victim. All the suspects fled in the vehicle. No one was injured, Sachs said. There is no description of the suspects or their vehicle, Sachs said. |
