Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The county medical examiner named the woman gunned down at the storage facility she worked at as detectives announced the arrest of a suspect. Patricia Villa, a 44-year-old Alhambra resident, was found at One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., by family members who went looking for her. Surveillance video reportedly indicated Villa was shot around 5:30 p.m. November 2, according to the Covina Police Department. Villa was found around 12:30 a.m. Monday. Investigators identified Juan Nava, 66, as a suspect. A search warrant was served at his home November 3 and he was arrested, according to the Covina Police Department. The shooting allegedly stemmed from Nava’s claims of property being burglarized from his storage unit, a claim he also made in December 2023. Nava allegedly grew angry that Villa apparently did not believe him, according to the Covina Police Department. Police seized assault weapons and ammunition from Nava’s home. Nava was officially charged with one count of murder, three counts of possessing an assault weapon, and special allegations of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.
Nava is being held without bail at the north County Correctional Facility in Castaic. CityWatch Editor COVINA - Police detectives are determining what led to the shooting death of a woman whose body was found at a storage facility Sunday afternoon. Police were called to One Stop Storage, 1432 N. Barranca Ave., around 5:45 p.m. The woman was found inside the facility and declared dead., according to the Covina Police Department. It is not publicly clear if she was found inside a storage unit, or elsewhere on the property. Police have yet to reveal if a suspect is being sought. CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man reportedly took his own life Thursday after a disturbance inside a home. A family member got into a struggle with the man who expressed suicidal desires in an attempt to dissuade him. No one else was killed or injured, according to Lt. Ryan Davis of the Covina Police Department. The incident unfolded on East Grovecenter Street west of South Starglen Drive. First responders were called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. The family member fled the home after struggling with the suicidal man. Members of the Covina Police Department SWAT team arrived to attempt to de-escalate the situation. A handgun was used, Davis told SGV CityWatch. As of 12:30 p.m., officers remained on scene awaiting the arrival of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Julian Teltscher, 20, died from Diphenhydramine toxicity. His death was ruled a suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. A decomposing body was discovered by a gardener clearing some residential brush near area of an elementary school. The discovery was made in the 500 block of East Thelborn Street. First responders were called around 3:11 p.m., according to Lt. Anthony Zavala of the Covina Police Department. “Based on the decomposition of the body, it looks like he might have been there a while,” Zavala told SGV CityWatch. A resident driving by the scene observed what appeared to be a body covered up on the sidewalk, a coroner van, yellow crime scene tape around the entire residential property and a large police presence. The body was obscured by brush at a home across from Barranca Elementary School, 727 S. First responders were sent to the 1100 block of North Conwell Avenue just before 6 a.m. Sunday, August 7. Life-saving measures were used to try and revive the infant, but she was ultimately declared dead at the scene at 6:14 a.m., according to the Covina Police Department. The mother was out of state. The infant and the infant’s 4-year-old and 1-year-old siblings were being watched by a babysitter, according to the Covina Police Department. Detectives already have, or are soon serving a search warrant at the home to collect potential evidence in this investigation. Detectors are working with the Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services and Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. Few details are available, but firefighters were called by Covina Police officers to the 400 block of South Barranca Avenue south of East Puente Street at 2:54 p.m. April 11, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Video provided to SGV CityWatch shows a lifeless body of a shirtless man laying on what appears to be an access road near the wash behind apartments in the neighborhood. The man has yet to be identified. Next of kin have yet to be notified, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. While the coroner has not yet identified the man, a memorial honoring him identified him as Daniel Matthew Diaz, 25. It is unclear how Diaz died. He reportedly suffered head trauma. A 10-year resident of the neighborhood described the day the body was found. “I had passed by and noticed that cops were blocking off the area and within 30 minutes it had yellow tape. Ambulance and paramedics were dispatched but left right away and Covina police officers stayed looking around for evidence,” according to the resident who asked that her name not be used. “When I was driving by there I had seen a young man digging in trash bins. I have a feeling it might be the same one. Because I drove by there again 40 mins after seeing him and there was already police blocking off the area,” the resident told SGV CityWatch. “We never see anything like this around these streets. It’s quiet around here but have been seeing a lot of homelessness lately. It’s sad.” The coroner will determine cause of death. Jwan Clinton, 42, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His cause of death was deferred, pending additional investigation. The body was located in a parking lot on the Grand Avenue side of the park. Officers were called to the parking lot of Wingate Park, 735 N. Glendora Ave., around 8:51 p.m. December 18 to a man down and bleeding from the head. Covina officers arrived and located the victim. Los Angeles County Firefighters arrived and declared the man dead at 9:09 p.m., according to Lt. Tony Zavala of the Covina Police Department in a previous interview. “There was some head trauma, but we don’t know if that’s a result from a fall, or if he was the victim of some type of crime,” Zavala told SGV CityWatch. Detectives are searching for surveillance footage that might help determine how the man died. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner will reveal the identity and cause of death. COVINA - Traffic lanes have reopened after a pickup truck crashed and came to rest on the right shoulder embankment on the I-10 freeway just west of Via Verde Saturday morning. A tan Chevrolet pickup truck crashed Just before 7:30 a.m. April 24 on the eastbound I-10 freeway. The driver is reportedly the only person found inside the crashed pickup, according to the California Highway Patrol. They were possibly as many as three other vehicles stopped in the center divider and on the right shoulder near the crash, but it is not clear yet if those vehicles were involved in a collision. The driver’s body was found partially hanging outside of the truck, but firefighters were reluctant to remove the driver until the coroner conducts an investigation, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department radio traffic.
