Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - No victims were found after a rap event ruckus spilled outside of Katie Jakes Bar & Grill where gunfire erupted in a parking lot early Wednesday. The shooting occurred around 1:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Katie Jakes, 750 Terrado Plaza, January 30. An argument or fight began in the bar and a number of patrons were kicked out, according to Sgt. Ryan Davis of the Covina Police Department. “It spilled over into the parking lot. There were reports of shots fired. Nobody was found struck by any rounds,” Davis said. “Casings were found at the scene to confirm a shooting did occur.”
Davis did not have any suspect or vehicle description. Officers interviewed some of the patrons, but they were uncooperative, Davis said. Katie Jakes was hosting a weekly hip hop event titled Neighborhood Watch Presents with rapper Benjirow headlining the event. Right around the time of the shooting, a patron was struck over the head with a beer bottle. The beer bottle attack was not reported until around 3 a.m., Davis said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - Two Los Angeles women will be resting inside some jail cells Friday after stealing from a Walmart shopping center and leading police on a brief chase just before 10 a.m. The women were found after crashing into a tree during the pursuit, just two blocks away from where they lifted the merchandise at Walmart, 1275 N. Azusa Ave., January 25. Officers saw a vehicle parked outside the store, still running with no one inside, according to the Covina Police Department. Officers watched the still-running vehicle and saw two suspects, later identified as 19-year-old Amya Kimani Malbrue and 22-year-old Olivia Chandler Robertson, flee the store carrying four filled trash bins, Covina Police said.
The chase was on after the women refused to yield during an attempted traffic stop. The women were found after crashing their vehicle into a tree and taking refuge in an apartment complex. Officers recovered the stolen merchandise within the vehicle, Covina Police said. The women were booked on suspicion of grand theft, felony shoplifting and resisting police. Malbrue’s bail is set at $10,000. Robertson’s bail is set at $25,000. Police were investigating the duo’s possible involvement in a robbery Thursday night somewhere in Los Angeles County. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A girl fled her would-be abductor after he reached out from a car and grabbed her as she walked to school, a police sergeant said. The attempted kidnapping occurred on Hollenbeck Avenue south of Puente Avenue between 7:40 a.m. and 7:53 a.m. January 25. The girl was uninjured and ran back home, according to Sgt. John Zumwalt of the Covina Police Department. The suspect was a passenger of a white older-model four-door sedan with tinted windows. The car pulled up to the girl along the curb line. The suspect opened the right front passenger door, reached out and grabbed the girl’s hand, Zumwalt said.
“She [the girl] was able to struggle free and ran back to her home,” Zumwalt said. No words were exchanged between the girl and suspect. The suspect is a Hispanic man, 30 to 40 years old. He wore a thin mustache and chin hair. He wore a dark baseball hat and a brown jacket. The girl did not get a look at the driver, Zumwalt said. The sedan is similar to a Nissan. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The Covina woman found running partially-clothed with blood on her body Friday has been booked on suspicion of murdering her 2-year-old son. Xa Dinh Ngo was released from hospitalization Monday and was arrested by Covina Police detectives on suspicion of murder, the Covina Police Department announced. A Covina patrol sergeant found Ngo half-naked and with blood splatters on her body running down the road in the 300 block of North Second Avenue, January 11 around 3:30 a.m.
After she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation, police learned her address and discovered a small fire on the second floor of her townhome at 141 E. Italia St.
Her son, identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as Alvis Puente, was discovered dead in the townhome. An autopsy has yet to be performed, according to Coroner Spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani. Ngo was uncooperative with Officers once detained, but alluded to a possible victim, Covina Police said. It is unclear if Ngo suffered from a mental condition, or was under the influence of drugs. Ngo is being held without bail in the Century Regional Detentional Facility in Los Angeles. The child was discovered after officers questioned the woman found running down the road in the 300 block of North Second Avenue, January 11 around 3:30 a.m. The woman was uncooperative when questioned, according to the Covina Police Department. A patrol sergeant found the woman, according to Sgt. David Rodriguez of Covina Police.
While detectives are not yet certain, they believe the woman to be the child’s mother, Rodriguez said.
The woman made statements alluding to a victim, but officers could not get a residence from her, Covina Police said. Officers finally learned the woman’s address and upon arrival, found visible flames from the second-floor unit and soon discovered a dead child within the townhouse, located at 141 E. Italia St. Covina officers summoned firefighters, who arrived on scene at 3:47 p.m. and knocked down flames four minutes later, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department representative. The woman is still being evaluated, Rodriguez said. The silver truck rolled over and came to rest on the front lawn of Charter Oak High School, 1430 E. Covina Blvd., around 7:35 a.m. The driver died at the scene, according to Lt. Trevor Gaumer of the Covina Police Department. Preliminary information suggests the driver suffered a medical emergency, which caused the crash, Gaumer said. The girl was transported to an area hospital after being extracted from the truck with the jaws of life, Gaumer said. Eastbound Covina Boulevard near the high school is blocked during the collision investigation.

COVINA - A reported stabbing victim was hospitalized after ending up at a Jack In the Box late Monday night.
The man wandered into Jack In the Box, 912 N. Azusa Ave., some time after 10:30 p.m. January 8. The man seemed unaffected by the fact that he was stabbed and bleeding, according to a Jack In the Box employee. “He walked in silently like nothing was wrong with him. He asked for a water cup and I said ‘do you need medical attention?’ He didn't respond. He continued to fill up his water cup,” according to Jack In the Box employee Ariel Arencibia. “I thought it was a joke so I went to the back and got on the line immediately with Covina [Police].
The man then left and walked to McDonald’s.
Officers found the bleeding man at Azusa Avenue and Cypress Street. He told them he had been stabbed, according to Sgt. Mike Colburn of the Covina Police Department. Colburn did not have any further information. Firefighters were summoned by police. The man was transported to an area trauma center, according to Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A vigilant resident is credited with providing police with surveillance footage of a suspect attempting to break into parked vehicles -- footage that led to the discovery of stolen property. Area transient Dominic Stonerheuark, 20, was caught on Ring security footage trying to open the doors to vehicles parked in a driveway January 5. The footage was taken to Covina Police where an officer recognized the suspect, according to the Covina Police Department. Sunday, January 6, the investigating officer located Stonerheuark at a laundromat in the 100 block of East Arrow Highway around 10 a.m.
Stonerheuark was found with various pieces of property surrounding him, including methamphetamine paraphernalia and a black gym bag, Covina Police said.
Stonerheuark denied ownership of the gym bag, but claimed the paraphernalia was his, Covina Police said. Stonerheuark was placed in custody. A search of the gym bag revealed 60 pieces of evidence, including government identification, passports, credit cards, debit cards, vehicle registration, a garage door opener, medication and sunglasses, Covina Police said. “Based on the names connected with these evidence items, there were nine victims located in the cities of Covina, Glendora and Azusa,” Covina Police said. Investigators are still attempting to locate some of those nine victims. “Two Covina victims reported they knew property was stolen from them prior to being contacted by Covina Police,” Covina Police said. “One victim in Covina and another victim in Azusa reported not being aware of the theft of their property until after being contacted by Covina Police.” None of the nine victims reported forced entry into their vehicles. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - A man in cardiac arrest was revived after responding officers used nalaxone to treat him after a drug overdose, Covina Police announced Saturday. Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a residence in the 1400 block of North Grand Avenue Friday at 7:30 p.m. The caller said a 33-year-old man stopped breathing after a drug overdose, the Covina Police Department said in a written statement.
“CPR was started by the reporting party until officers arrived. Officers continued CPR, deployed nalaxone HCL (Narcan) nasal spray medication to the victim and the victim began breathing,” Covina Police.
The man was transported to an area hospital by Los Angeles County Firefighters. He was subsequently released after receiving treatment, Covina Police said. |
