Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – An officer was hospitalized for injuries considered not life-threatening after being shot during a struggle with a suspect who fled from a reported stolen vehicle Wednesday.
The unidentified suspect ran from officers in the 1000 block of West Gladstone Street around 4 p.m. February 16. Two officers chased the suspect on foot and an altercation began, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. “During the struggle, the suspect produced a handgun and fired at the officers, at which time one officer returned gunfire and an officer involved shooting occurred. One officer was struck in the lower torso and was transported to a local hospital,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. The suspect is only described as a man in his 30s. Next of kin have yet to be notified, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The suspect was struck multiple times. He was treated by paramedics at the scene, but was pronounced dead. A handgun was recovered at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. A 28-year-old passenger in the reported stolen vehicle was detained, but it is unclear if she was arrested or released. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Police arrested a man who may have possibly ignited the small brush fire that burned for a few hours about homes in Azusa Saturday.
Artemio Sanchez-Gutierrez, 30, was booked on suspicion of arson. He told the Los Angeles County Fire arson investigators that he put out a cigarette in the area where the fire started and believes he may have ignited the small brush fire, according to the Azusa Police Department. The fire scorched about one and a half acres to two acres in the hillside above Azusa February 12, according to Dispatch Supervisor Melanie Flores of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Water dropping helicopters equipped with night vision aided ground crews in keeping the fire from expanding. Firefighters are continuing mop-up of the location this morning, Flores told SGV CityWatch. Sanchez was issued a citation and released, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor UPDATE, 5:30 p.m.: SGV CityWatch is attempting to get clarification from the Azusa Police Officer’s Association, which stated in an early-morning post February 12 that former police chief Mike Bertelsen issued an immediate resignation.

AZUSA - The city appointed an acting police chief Friday as the department’s prior chief stepped back from the role due to medical reasons. The City of Azusa made the announcement Saturday that Mike Bertelsen would step back temporarily and that Lt. Rocky Wenrick was named acting police chief. No time frame has been provided for Bertelsen’s return, according to the City of Azusa. Wenrick is a nearly 20-year veteran of the Azusa Police Department, having previously served as corporal, sergeant, oversaw the detective bureau, Homeless Assistance Liaison Officer team and gang unit, according to the City of Azusa. “I support Chief Bertelsen’s decision in following the recommendations of his doctor and doing what is best for his health and his family. We sincerely wish him the very best and are committed to continuing his good efforts and the work of this department,” said City Manager Sergio Gonzalez in a written statement. Sakia Morris, 40, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. A cause of death is still pending as an exam has yet to be scheduled. Morris was found dead by authorities called to conduct a welfare check February 7 around 11:30 a.m. at Foothill Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. Morris was pronounced dead at 11:46 a.m., according to coroner Public Information Officer Sarah Ardalani. The woman was found near a bus bench on Foothill Boulevard near Alameda Avenue February 7 around 11:30 a.m. It is unclear how long the woman may have been deceased before being discovered, according to Lt. Fernando Vasconcelos of the Azusa Police Department. Los Angeles County firefighters also responded. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner has been called to the scene. |
