Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A driver was hospitalized Saturday after another driver unloaded a firearm at him while on the 210 freeway early Saturday. A man from Fontana was eastbound 210 freeway at Irwindale Avenue in a Kia when someone from inside another vehicle began firing at him. Multiple bullets struck the left side of the Kia. The man from Fontana was also wounded in the left leg. He continued to flee eastbound until he stopped at a 7-Eleven in Azusa at 504 S. Citrus Ave, according to the California Highway Patrol. The shooting took place around 1:50 a.m.
“The driver entered the 7-11 and was assisted by the store clerk. The driver was transported to Pomona Valley Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his left leg,” according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. CHP investigators do not have information on the shooter. Osmin Palencia, 36, surrendered himself to Azusa officers, according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. Investigators from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Azusa Police quickly learned after the fire erupted that arson was to blame. Police did not state how Palencia became a suspect. Palencia is a transient who lives In the San Gabriel riverbed near where the fire erupted, Azusa Police said. Booking information for Palencia was not readily available. Firefighters have further revised acreage burned to 1,400 with 3 percent containment. Crews will have greater emphasis on building containment lines on the northern flank of the fire to prevent deeper spread into the wilderness, according to the US Forest Service. Greater containment lines were established on the south side of the fire overnight near the gated Mountain Cove community as minimal fire activity occurred near the homes. Firefighters will scout for topographical features to aid in extending containment lines, the US Forest Service said. Weather over the next four days will be the biggest challenge for ground crews. Temperatures will be in the low hundreds Saturday through Wednesday. Humidity is expected to be from 17 to 22 percent. Thunderstorms and unstable winds are possible Saturday, the US Forest Service said. Due to the Ranch 2 Fire and fire weather conditions in the San Gabriel Valley, Highway 39 remains closed from Sierra Madre Avenue to East Fork Road. Glendora Mountain Road is closed from Big Dalton Road to East Fork Road. Glendora Ridge Road is closed from GMR to Mt. Baldy Road. After a better assessment of fire activity, authorities now say 2,500 acres have burned. No containment has been reached, according to the US Forest Service. “Fire activity is expected to increase today due to forecasted weather conditions,” the US Forest Service said. Evacuees from the Mountain Cove gated community were allowed to return home after orders were lifted at 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the Azusa Police Department. The Ranch Fire was first reported around 2:45 p.m. August 13. The fire ignited along Highway 39 and Ranch Road, near homes nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains. Roughly an hour into the firefight, some residents of Mountain Cove were issued a mandatory evacuation order. Certain residents were under voluntary evacuations, according to the Azusa Police Department. As the day progressed, the Fire, while still posing a threat, inched away from homes. 200 fire personnel are on scene. Fire vehicles will remain in the area for the next three days to monitor fire activity. The fire is burning along San Gabriel Canyon Road bear Ranch Road. The fire is roughly 30 acres and growing, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Mountain Cove area north and west of Turning Leaf are under mandatory evacuations, according to the Azusa Police Department. No traffic will be allowed north towards the Mountain Cove gated community, according to the Azusa Police Department. The fire has a potential to burn 1,000 acres, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Police responding to the 200 block of North Dalton Avenue at 7:35 p.m. August 8 found the victim suffering from three gunshot wounds. He was shot elsewhere in the neighborhood and ran before collapsing, according to Sgt. Seth Chapman of the Azusa Police Department. Detectives believe the shooting was gang related, Chapman told SGV CityWatch. Investigators are still searching for the suspect. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Sgt. Police and firefighters responded to North Dalton Avenue south of East Third Street just after 7:30 p.m. Firefighters were dispatched to treat a gunshot victim at 7:36 p.m. They were cleared to enter the scene around 7:38 p.m. and eventually transported a patient, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. One SGV CityWatch reader described hearing what sounded like four gunshots. Officers quickly arrived and taped off the crime scene. It is unclear if a suspect is being sought. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A 34-year-old Fontana man is accused of luring a teen into a sexual encounter by posing as a 19-year-old, Azusa Police said. Suspect Cristian Zapien Alvarado is also accused of sending nude photos and video of him having sex in hopes of meeting the teen. He allegedly befriended the teen through social media in July, according to the Azusa Police Department.
“On one occasion, Alvarado was successful in luring the victim into a meeting,” Azusa Police said in a written statement. Alvarado was arrested July 30. Azusa police wants to remind parents and teens of the dangers on social media and the Internet by never accepting a friend request from a stranger and to never meet a stranger in person.
