Close Shave: Man Narrowly Escapes Speeding Vehicle in Azusa

AZUSA - A driver from Colton was arrested Thursday after crashing a vehicle that narrowly missed a man watering a lawn on Sierra Madre Avenue.

The vehicle being driven at a high rate of speed blew past a stop sign at North Dalton Avenue and Sierra Madre Avenue, struck a curb, two parked vehicles and ultimately came to rest after destroying a backyard fence.

First responders were called to the crash at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, August 10. The driver and two passengers of the crashed vehicle fled, but were all found. The driver was arrested and cited in the field for misdemeanor hit and run, according to the Azusa Police Department.

Security camera video showed the resident’s fancy footwork dodging the collision and flying debris until the car came to a rest on the front lawn.

Jan’s Towing was called to lift the car off the property.

AZUSA - A domestic violence suspect accused of shooting a woman found severely injured in an Azusa hotel parking lot was captured and was reportedly preparing to evade capture, police said.

David Ray Mesa, 45, was caught in Colton April 16 with the help of the US Marshal Service. He was arrested without incident, according to the Azusa Police Department.

A woman was found critically wounded in the parking lot of Home2 Suites, 229 S. Azusa Ave., April 13 by officers responding to a shooting call around 6:45 p.m. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to her neck, according to the Azusa Police Department.

“Azusa officers and detectives began investigating the shooting and determined it to be an incident of domestic violence,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement.

In the hours after the shooting, investigators learned that Mesa was attempting to evade capture.

With the help of the US Marshal Service, Mesa was tracked to Colton.

Mesa is being held without bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the Pomona courthouse April 20.
