The Azusa Police Department’s case will proceed in the appropriate direction once the coroner determines the exact cause of death, according to Sgt. Jorge Sandoval of the Azusa Police Department Detective Bureau. The mother of the dead newborn is not in custody and remains free until the investigation can proceed, Sandoval said. “We’re obviously looking at various options before we proceed one way or the other,” Sandoval said.
The newborn was identified as “Baby Girl” Bello. Her cause of death was deferred, pending additional investigation, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Deputies and firefighters responded to East Newburgh Street east of North Donna Beth Avenue around 1:42 a.m. March 17 in unincorporated Azusa to treat the victim. Medics could not determine what type of wound the victim had to his leg. He was taken to a hospital to determine what caused the wound, according to Lt. Mackenzie of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station.
The injury occurred elsewhere and the victim turned up in Azusa. He was walking around when deputies and medics arrived, Mackenzie said. The victim was only described as a Hispanic male adult. The victim was not cooperating with the investigation, Mackenzie said. deputies apparently were still unable to determine what caused the injury later Sunday, according to Sgt. White of the Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. Police were called at 3:43 p.m. to an apartment complex in the 600 block of East Fifth Street. The newborn was found in the dumpster behind the apartment complex, according to Lt. Robert Chivas of the Azusa Police Department. “The newborn was motionless. There were no signs of life,” Chivas said. The newborn was treated by both Azusa Police officers and Los Angeles County Firefighters. The newborn was taken to an area hospital where doctors could not revive her and she was declared dead at 4:37 p.m., Chivas said.
No suspect has been identified and remains out of custody. The lieutenant could not comment on who made the 9-1-1 call or who found the child first. It is unclear how the baby was found, or who the baby belongs to. The baby was found in a dumpster in an apartment complex behind apartments on the southwest corner of 5th Street and Rockvale Avenue. The suspect is detained and is being treated by Los Angeles County Firefighters on the westbound 210 freeway at Azusa Avenue. The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. The suspect became irate, refused to comply with the officer’s commands to stop and began exposing his genitals, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic.
