CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man was found dead inside a motel room Sunday afternoon. The cause has not been determined yet, but investigators believe nothing suspicious led to the man’s death, according to the Azusa Police Department. First responders were sent to the Super 8 by Wyndham, 117 N. Azusa Ave., around 2 p.m. November 2. It is not immediately clear how long the man, identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as 48-year-old Walnut Creek resident Pavle Males, was in the room before being discovered. The cause of death has been deferred, pending additional investigation. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A small brush fire was extinguished quickly by Los Angeles County and U.S. Forest Service firefighters Thursday. The fire was reported in the San Gabriel River closest to Mirardor Drive and North San Gabriel Canyon Road around 10:43 a.m. October 30. The blaze was contained to about one-quarter of an acre, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was not deemed arson, but evidence suggested it was connected to a transient camp, according to the Azusa Police Department. A person was detained near the source of the fire and was arrested, but for narcotics-related crimes, according to the Azusa Police Department. A smaller fire was reported around 6:40 a.m. the same day in the river bed further west from the second blaze. The smaller fire was likely a warming fire ignited by a transient, a Los Angeles County Fire Captain told the Azusa Police Department. No structure damage was reported. ********** Copyright 2025. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office officially filed charges regarding an altercation and stabbing at a carnival almost one week ago. Paul Holguin, 45, was charged with one count of attempted murder. He was additionally charged with the special allegation of one or more serious violent felony convictions, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Raymond Escobedo, 21, was charged with one count of being an accessory after the fact. The altercation and stabbing at the carnival, which took place and Memorial Park, 340 N. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two suspects were arrested after a reported gang tussle led to a stabbing October 18. The incident unfolded at the Azusa Golden Days Festival held at Memorial Park, 320 N. Orange Pl. around. 7:30 p.m. Police intervened in the fight between three people. One other three suffered stab wounds, according to the Azusa Police Department. “The other two subjects involved in the fight were arrested for various charges. A knife was located on one of the detained suspects,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. The suspect names were not immediately released. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Cleanup continues on the west 210 freeway west of Vernon Avenue after a major crash sent 5,000 beer cans and kegs across all lanes. Three semi trucks hauling trailers and other vehicles were involved in the crash just before 3 a.m. One of the trailers split in half, spilling the sudsy contents, according to the California Highway Patrol. While the majority of the mess took up the No. 2, 3 and 4 lanes, the CHP briefly stopped all lanes of traffic to remove remaining debris near the center divider to the right shoulder. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Police from Azusa and surrounding agencies secured and cleared Azusa High School after a threatening call was made to the campus Tuesday. Officers with weapons drawn surrounded the school, 240 N. Cerritos Ave. video from the scene showed the armed response unfolding around 3:15 p.m. September 23. After a thorough search of the campus was made, the threat was determined to not be credible, according to the Azusa Police Department. Similar threats unfolded at to Upland Unified School District campuses the same day. Upland High School, 565 W. 11th St., and Western Christian High School, 100 W. Ninth St., wen pt on lockdown and were searched after threatening calls were made. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The driver of a gray Honda Civic possibly passed out behind the wheel before crashing head-on into a tree on the shoulder of the west 210 freeway Saturday. The crash happened near the Vernon Avenue on ramp just before 3:30 p.m. August 23. Witnesses reported the driver may have passed out, causing the vehicle to swerve across all lanes before slamming into the tree, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A fire fighter paramedic last stationed in the city of Azusa died Friday, August 15, the Los Angeles County Fire Department announced. Jerry W. Guzman was last assigned to Fire Station 32 and served the community for 23 years, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “To ensure the proper care and support of the Guzman family and our LACoFD personnel, Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone has activated the Department’s chaplains, Peer Support team, behavioral health clinicians, and Memorial Management team,” according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department in a written statement. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two suspects who attempted to flee officers after allegedly robbing their victim of cash and other belongings Wednesday night were caught after their vehicle became disabled during a pursuit, police said. Kevin Ochoa, an 19-year-old Los Angeles man, and passenger Daniel Mendoza, an 18-year-old South Gate man, were arrested. The firearm reportedly used in the robbery was also recovered, according to the Azusa Police Department. Police were sent to Zacatecas Park around 10:53 p.m. August 6. Officers located the suspect vehicle and then attempted to pull over the driver, but he allegedly refused to stop and briefly lead police on a pursuit. A helicopter with the Foothill Air Support Team assisted officers on the ground.
