Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – The driver of a stolen vehicle was jailed Tuesday after refusing to stop for police and leading them on a pursuit into La Puente.
Azusa officers attempted to stop the driver of a stolen 2015 Hyundai Sonata around 7:49 p.m. in the 800 block of South Cerritos Avenue July 6, but the driver, identified as Gabriel Garcia, fled. He took the pursuit to the 210 freeway, according to Sgt. Bailey of the Azusa Police Department. The pursuit went west on the 210 freeway, south on the 605 freeway and into El Monte on surface streets. Garcia allegedly sideswiped another occupied vehicle, causing mild injuries to the other driver, Bailey told SGV CityWatch. Police continued to chase Garcia into La Puente where he fled the vehicle, leaving two passengers behind, Bailey told SGV CityWatch. The pursuit ended in the area of Valinda Avenue and Doublegrove Street. Garcia allegedly ran through residential yards and over fences briefly before being caught, Bailey told SGV CityWatch. Police booked 18-year-old Garcia, a La Mirada man, on suspicion of felony evading, unlawful taking of a vehicle, felony hit and run and resisting arrest, Bailey told SGV CityWatch. Garcia’s two passengers were briefly detained, but released. Garcia is being held in lieu of $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in the West Covina courthouse Thursday, July 8. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – No one was apparently injured in a shooting at a condo Monday night. Officers responding to a shooting report found a condo unit in the 600 block of East Lee Place was damaged around 7:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Nick Covarrubias of the Azusa Police Department. Police were told of a white Kia seen fleeing the area. After locating and attempting to stop the driver, officers gave chase when the driver refused to stop, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspects, including a juvenile, fled from Azusa and California Highway Patrol officers who attempted to stop them along surface streets and freeways in Azusa, Glendora, Baldwin Park, El Monte and San Dimas. The white sedan driven by one of the suspects crashed into another vehicle outside Target, 888 W. Arrow Hwy.
Two suspects ran from the Kia after it crashed and ran through the shopping center, but officers found them and detained them. Three others still occupying the vehicle were also detained, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. Two people inside the sedan that was hit, a woman and boy, were not seriously injured. The boy was hospitalized as a precaution, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspect names were not readily available Tuesday morning, but among the charges the driver faces include felony evading and felony hit and run. Attempted murder will also be considered for the triggerman, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. It was not immediately clear if gang affiliations factored into the shooting. The white Kia was not registered to any of the suspects, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. |
