CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A pursuit suspect was taken into custody around 4:30 a.m. Sunday after holding off law enforcement on the 210 freeway for a few hours. The suspect evaded law enforcement on several freeways before coming to a stop on the eastbound 210 east of Citrus Avenue. The incident first started around 11:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of North San Dimas Avenue in San Dimas, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau. Sheriffs SEB did not specify what that initial incident was, and calls to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station supervisor have gone unanswered. The pursuit came to a stop around 1:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol stopped all eastbound traffic during the standoff. During the standoff, the suspect exited the truck and sometimes walked around it while holding a gun to his head. He would occasionally speak with someone on the phone. The suspect even fired a weapon multiple times into the air, according to video taken at the scene, before surrendering. Others agencies assisting with the standoff included Azusa Police, Glendora Police and the area Foothills Special Enforcement Team. Esteban Garcia, 50, was booked on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man is recovering from injuries considered not life-threatening after being shot in the San Gabriel riverbed December 31. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Detectives are determining the motive for a late-night shooting that caused minor damage to a vehicle and a carport structure Saturday. Callers reported gunfire around 10:53 p.m. in the 800 block of North Pasadena Avenue February 8. No gunshot victims were located, according to the Azusa Police Department. Officers located evidence of a shooting. A nearby carport wall was hit by gunfire, as well as a vehicle bumper. There was apparently no suspect or vehicle description. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two people were hospitalized after a shooting occurred in a residential area Tuesday night. First responders were sent to East Newburgh Street and North Donna Beth Avenue around 8:19 p.m. January 21 to a report of a shooting with a victim down, according to the Azusa Police Department. Details are few at the time this story launched. It is unclear if the second transported victim was hit by gunfire, or perhaps suffered some other medical emergency. Several vehicles were witnessed fleeing the area. It is not publicly clear if investigators have identified a motive or identified any suspects. No one was in custody at the time this interview was conducted (5:19 a.m.). This area of town is the scene of frequent gang violence. A man died in a shooting June of 2023. A teen survived being shot in May 2023. A teen was shot and wounded in the leg in February 2023. Multiple teens were arrested in a December 2022 murder. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A Perris man is facing an attempted murder charge, accused of shooting at a fellow driver on the 210 freeway October 11. The shooting occurred on the eastbound 210 freeway west of Citrus Avenue. The suspect, Josue Saul Mejia, 41, shot at a woman’s car multiple times. One bullet penetrated a side window, causing it to shatter, according to the California Highway Patrol. The 30-year-old female driver was treated at the scene for minor lacerations. The California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team identified Mejia as a suspect. He was arrested in Perris October 14 with assistance from the CHP Inland Division Investigative Services Unit and Major Crimes Unit. Mejia was booked on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim was taken to a hospital where they later died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It is unclear if investigators identified a suspect or motive. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A 19-year-old Tijuana man accused of attempting to kill a rival gang member during a shooting in a Stater Bros. shopping center was caught July 3. José de Jesus Martinez was detained at the same Ysidro border crossing and was held until Azusa Police detectives arrived to place him under arrest. He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to the Azusa Police Department. The Shooting Took place April 1 in the Stater Bros. shopping center in the 1100 block of East Alosta Avenue. Officers responded around 5:39 p.m. Detectives were able to determine the suspect’s identity the night of the shooting and then learned he allegedly fled to Tijuana, Mexico. Detectives sought a warrant for Martinez’s arrest and federal border authorities were notified of the armed and dangerous fugitive’s identity, according to the Azusa Police Department. It is not publicly clear if detectives identified any other gang member involved in the shooting and what their status is in the investigation. Martinez is scheduled for an appearance in West Covina Superior Court Monday, July 8. First responders were sent to the 300 block of South O’Malley Avenue around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, April 13. Ramirez was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital where he died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. What led to the shooting has not been shared by investigators. Residents reported hearing a hail of gunfire just after 9 p.m. January 31. First Responders were sent to the 100 block of North Azusa Avenue to investigate the gunfire and found a victim with wounds to his upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Investigators apparently have no suspect information. It is not publicly clear if a motive was established, or if more than one firearm was used in the shooting. The crime appeared to take place between the Mobil gas station and a carwash just north of 1st Street. Yellow evidence markers dotted the asphalt to the east and west of the gas station. Two bicycles were left discarded near the gas station and carwash. Across Azusa Avenue to the east, an officer meticulously searched the lawn of the adjacent Azusa Health Center for spent shell casings or bullets.
