CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two burglary suspects were taken into custody July 16, allegedly found with iPads and random construction equipment taken from Duarte High School. Both suspects were tracked through the stolen iPads to a vacant business in Azusa, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. Entry was forced into a storage container at Duarte High School, 1565 Central Ave., between 4 p.m. July 15 and 6 a.m. July 16, according to the Sheriff’s Temple Station. The Azusa Police Department was notified at 6:44 a.m. July 16 that the signal from the stolen iPads was tracked to a vacant business in the city. “The suspects refused to allow Officers entry into the business and a search warrant was served. Azusa PD Officers recovered the stolen property,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. Talia Martinez and William Avetyan of North Hollywood were both arrested. Los Angeles county booking information is not available for either suspect. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man and woman are being sought after vandalizing machines at a laundromat recently, taking coins and causing roughly $1,000 in damage. The crimes occurred May 12 and May 16 and were caught on camera. In one video, a woman is seen opening two coin boxes and quickly taking money. In all, $200 was stolen. The locked coin boxes on six machines were damaged, according to one of the owners. The laundromat sits in the Edgewood Shopping Center, 251 E. Gladstone St. “We had to replace the locks because they had broken them. It was costly and unfortunate,” according to one of the owners. “They actually only got into two of the boxes but damaged many while trying to get into the locked boxes. Six machines were damaged.” The husband and wife team who have run the laundromat for 27 years have not had too many problems, except for some graffiti and homeless issues. The Azusa Police Department is investigating. Anyone who can recognize the man and woman are urged to call the Azusa Police Department at 626-812-3200. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man seen burglarizing two houses in as many days was finally jailed after security video tied him to the first break-in, according to the Azusa Police Department.
Andre Depree Bishop, 43, is accused of a late night break-in June 21 in the 900 block of Chaparral Lane. Officers, called to the burglary at 11:42 p.m., did not find a suspect after clearing the home, but video from the resident’s Ring camera caught the crime in progress, according to the Azusa Police Department. The next day, a burglary suspect walked into an occupied home through an unlocked front door around 8:44 a.m. in the 300 block of North Fenimore Avenue. A resident told the suspect to get out. The suspect fled, but was caught a short distance away by officers, according to the Azusa Police Department. “Based on the resident’s video surveillance, it was confirmed that the suspect identified as Andre Bishop, was also the suspect in the residential burglary call on Chaparral Ln.,” according to the Azusa Police Department. Bishop was transferred to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles June 24 and is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse June 27.

AZUSA - A vigilant resident scared off a would-be burglar April 23 as he was being watched through a surveillance camera.
The suspect scoped out a parked vehicle and tried to take a child’s scooter before the resident yelled at him in the 100 block of North Barbara Avenue just before 1:30 a.m.
The suspect scared off in Azusa bears a striking resemblance to the suspect sought by Irwindale Police for at least two vehicle burglaries and attempting multiple other vehicle break-ins in the 16000 block of Calle Breceda April 23 between 12:10 a.m. and 12:15 a.m.

42-year-old Daniel Mossberg, a Baldwin Park man, and Christopher Vandehey, a 37-year-old Covina man, were arrested and booked on suspicion of burglary and possessing burglary tools, according to the Azusa Police Department. Police were called just after 7:32 p.m. Both men allegedly cut open a gate to the front of the business at 415 S. Motor Ave. a rear door was forced open allowing the suspects access to the business where they were stripping copper wire from inside, according to the Azusa Police Department. Both suspects were released on a citation, according to Los Angeles County booking records. 27-year-old Roberto Vera was reportedly caught with items taken from Starbucks, 890 E. Alosta Ave. Thursday night after smashing through the coffee shop’s windows, according to the Azusa Police Department. A Good Samaritan called officers after witnessing the burglary in progress around 11:30 p.m. The Good Samaritan told officers where the suspect fled and officers were able to find and detain him, Azusa Police said. Officers were able to quickly identify the property the suspect held as belonging to Starbucks, Azusa Police said. Vera was arrested and booked on suspicion of several felonies, including commercial burglary and looting during a state emergency, Azusa Police said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Stolen property from several burglaries was recovered Wednesday after the Azusa Police SWAT team took a suspect into custody. Azusa man Gregory Paul Xanthull, 36, was arrested with help from an upland police department K9. Detectives began investigating the burglaries April 20, according to the Azusa police department in a written statement.
Azusa police serve a search warrant, but did not state where Xanthull was found. Xanthull was arrested at 4:46 a.m. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He is being held at the Azusa Police Department jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse May 8, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Officers discovered stolen property inside a vehicle during a traffic stop Monday. An observant neighbor witnessed four suspicious subjects near a vehicle in the 300 block of Viewcrest Drive around 2:39 p.m. July 29. Police found the vehicle after it was driven away and conducted a traffic stop and discovered stolen property inside the vehicle, according to Jorge Sandoval of the Azusa Police Department. Miscellaneous stolen items were found, along with items taken in a residential burglary in the immediate area. “It was also determined that the individuals had also burglarized additional residences, however those locations and/or victims have yet to be identified,” Sandoval stated in a press release.
Austrell Williams, 19, from Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of residential burglary and possessing stolen property. Three teens ranging in age from 15 to 17 years old were also arrested on the same crimes. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man clad in a yellow rain coat attempted to break his way into a building at the Azusa Unified School District yard Sunday night, police said. The suspect fled from officers attempting to contact him outside the district building, 546 S. Citrus Ave., around 11:12 p.m. February 3, according to Lt. Robert Chivas of the Azusa Police Department. Police reported a padlock appeared as if someone attempted to force it open at one of the buildings on site, Chivas said.
“We were able to determine that nothing was taken,” Chivas said. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the San Dimas Station were called to assist with a search after a suspect reportedly fled across Citrus Avenue and into a nearby nursery in an unincorporated portion of town, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. The suspect also appeared have a medium build and was average in height. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A burglary suspect is still hospitalized after crashing during a pursuit and his two accomplices are still outstanding, a police sergeant said. The collision occurred at North San Gabriel Avenue at West Ninth Street around 9:25 p.m. January 28. The three suspects were sought after apparently burglarizing a home, according to Sgt. Jorge Sandoval of the Azusa Police Department. Police responded to the Rosedale community and the 1300 block of Macneil Drive around 9:13 p.m. on a report of suspicious circumstances. Arriving officers saw two people fleeing the rear yard of a home, Sandoval said.
A vehicle fled the area at high speed as additional officers arrived and a pursuit was initiated, Sandoval said. The suspect crashed into an occupied vehicle, injuring the other vehicle’s occupants. The suspect driver, a 23-year-old Los Angeles man, was detained by Azusa Police and later transported to a hospital for his injuries. The driver, Zuberi Tajamal Williams, was booked on suspicion of evading police, residential burglary and felony hit and run. Williams was booked in the field and later hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, Azusa Police said in a written statement. Firefighters arrived on scene at 9:29 p.m. and extricated one person from the crash. The two other people injured in the crash were also hospitalized, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Williams was released Tuesday morning at 2:45 a.m. after being officially booked at 2:42 a.m., according to Los Angeles County booking records. After being booked, Williams was hospitalized. Williams is under Post Release Community Supervision. A search for the two suspects at the Macneil address were not located after a search, Sandoval said. Court appearance information for Williams was not yet available. |
