Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two females were reportedly attacked in Azusa resulting in the arrest of an 18-year-old and four juveniles, one armed with a gun, police said.
One or more of the five occupants in the suspect vehicle are accused of yelling racial slurs at two females near the 300 block of East Foothill Boulevard early Friday morning before 1:18 a.m. One of the suspects also threw objects at the two females, hitting one of them, according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. Prior to the reported assault, police stopped the vehicle and its occupants in the area of North Alameda Avenue and East Fifth Street after the driver was moving at high speed. It was during the traffic stop that police found a handgun on one of the juveniles, Azusa police said. Soon after the traffic stop, the females flagged down another officer to report the assault. Police soon realized that the speeding suspects and the suspects in the assault were one in the same, Azusa police said. Neither of the females were injured in the assault. Arrested was 18-year-old Gabriel Ornelas from Ontario. He was booked on suspicion of child endangerment, hate crime, and battery. One juvenile was arrested for possessing a handgun, one juvenile was arrested on suspicion of hate crime and battery and two others were arrested for violating curfew. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – Deputies and the Los Angeles County Coroner are investigating the circumstances surrounding a man who was declared dead at the L Line Station Friday. There does not initially appear to be any foul play behind the death of the male on the station platform. Deputies and medics were called to the station platform at 4:20 a.m. June 26, according to Ramon Montenegro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau.
Los Angeles County Paramedics attempted to revive the male who was found unconscious and not breathing. He was declared dead at 5:04 a.m., Montenegro told SGV CityWatch. Surveillance footage is being reviewed as part of the investigation, Montenegro said. Buses are transporting riders to and from the APU/Citrus College Station and the Azusa Downtown Station, according to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – No one was apparently injured in a shooting at a condo Monday night. Officers responding to a shooting report found a condo unit in the 600 block of East Lee Place was damaged around 7:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Nick Covarrubias of the Azusa Police Department. Police were told of a white Kia seen fleeing the area. After locating and attempting to stop the driver, officers gave chase when the driver refused to stop, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspects, including a juvenile, fled from Azusa and California Highway Patrol officers who attempted to stop them along surface streets and freeways in Azusa, Glendora, Baldwin Park, El Monte and San Dimas. The white sedan driven by one of the suspects crashed into another vehicle outside Target, 888 W. Arrow Hwy.
Two suspects ran from the Kia after it crashed and ran through the shopping center, but officers found them and detained them. Three others still occupying the vehicle were also detained, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. Two people inside the sedan that was hit, a woman and boy, were not seriously injured. The boy was hospitalized as a precaution, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. The suspect names were not readily available Tuesday morning, but among the charges the driver faces include felony evading and felony hit and run. Attempted murder will also be considered for the triggerman, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. It was not immediately clear if gang affiliations factored into the shooting. The white Kia was not registered to any of the suspects, Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. Marty Anthony Michaels, 38, who is also a convicted felon, was taken into custody June 19. After he eventually surrendered, a loaded handgun was found in Michaels’ home, according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. Azusa Police, with help from an Upland Police K9, executed a search warrant at Michaels’ residence, but he ordered officers to leave, the Azusa Police Department said. Members of the Azusa Police SWAT Team arrived and de-escalated the situation. Michaels was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, the Azusa Police Department said. The search is taking place in the area of Arrow Highway between Vincent Avenue and Lark Ellen Avenue. Many sheriff’s deputies arrived to set a perimeter to search for the armed and dangerous suspect and were aided at one point by a helicopter, according to Sgt. Emch of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station. A witness to the search heard a circling helicopter pilot order residents to stay inside their homes and that an armed suspect was on the loose. Emch did not have any further details regarding the search, including whether the suspect was committing a burglary, an assault with a deadly weapon, or was brandishing a weapon or anyone. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Investigators announced the arrest of one of two men involved in the killing of a man at an Azusa bus stop from just more than a year ago. The unnamed driver was identified, located and taken into custody, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which declined to provide more details on the arrest. Investigators released a composite sketch recently of the man believed to have pulled the trigger in the deadly July 14, 2019 Azusa shooting. The crime unfolded at 7:44 p.m. in the 400 block of South Azusa Avenue just north of Gladstone Street. John Medrano, 24, was struck by gunfire while walking with a teen boy. The suspect is believed to be a Sentinel Boys gang member. The trigger man exited a black 2017 Toyota Corolla 4-DR, opened fire, got back in the car and fled, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Medrano was hospitalized, but later died. The boy was uninjured, homicide investigators said.
The Corolla was driven away eastbound on Gladstone Street. A witness to the shooting helped investigators develop the composite sketch. The suspect is only described as a Hispanic man in his 20s and stands 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. A partial license plate of “924” was obtained, investigators said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man was beaten to death with a baseball bat in a daytime assault Wednesday, Police said. The suspect, 23-year-old Manuel Banuelos of Pasadena, was found and arrested a short distance from the beating at 809 N. Azusa Ave. June 10. The victim was hospitalized after being treated by paramedics at the scene, but later died, according to the Azusa Police Department. The attack occurred around 2:14 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Officers found the unidentified victim bleeding from the head, Azusa Police said in a written statement. Bystanders helped Azusa officers locate Banuelos, who was booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held in the Azusa City jail without bail, Azusa Police said. Banuelos is scheduled for an appearance in court June 12. |
