Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The California Highway Patrol has issued a three-hour Sig Alert for a multi-vehicle wreck on the eastbound 210 freeway just east of Azusa Avenue.
At least one person was injured in the crash, which was reported just after 2 p.m. December 29 in the No. 3 and 4 lanes. The Citrus Avenue on ramp to the west 210 freeway is also closed, the CHP said. One of the semi truck drivers was transported to an area hospital in unknown condition, according to the CHP Traffic Management Center. Possibly as many as five other vehicles are involved in the crash. The CHP is requesting to have the semi trucks hauled away. One of the semi trucks was hauling at least 40,000 to 50,000 pounds of products. The collision occurred just before 11 a.m. on North San Gabriel Avenue at West 4th Street. The white sedan was pushed up on the southwest sidewalk, coming within mere feet of hitting a restaurant. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:01 a.m. They arrived 11 minutes later and reported one occupant with a head injury, according to a representative with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. All other injuries involved in the collision were considered minor, according to Azusa Police Sergeant Seth Chapman. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Detectives are investigating the theft of multiple vehicles from a dealership recently, one of which was found crashed on San Gabriel Canyon Road Monday.
An SUV was found overturned by U.S. Forest Service personnel on San Gabriel Canyon Road at mile marker 32.51 around 10:16 a.m. At least seven people were in the SUV and appeared to look underage, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. At least one occupant requested police to not be called, the CHP said. As CHP officers worked to determine ownership of the vehicle, they discovered the SUV was taken from L.A. Motors, 1043 Arrow Hwy., in Azusa. The Azusa Police Department was unable to provide details on the investigation. Detectives are unavailable due to the Christmas holiday. Azusa Police were notified by the dealership owner that as many as six high-end vehicles were taken overnight, the CHP said. It was unclear if anyone from the crashed SUV was arrested. Los Angeles County Firefighters and a helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived to the scene, but its unclear if anyone was hospitalized. The suspect was found inside the warehouse in the 1500 block of McKinley Avenue where officers initially contacted, struggled with and fired upon him, according to the Azusa Police Department. It is unclear if the suspect died from Azusa Police gunfire, or if he took his own life, police said. The suspect was only described as a Hispanic man in his 50s. Coroner investigators are barely en route to the scene, according to Investigator Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. At least three Azusa Police officers arrived to the warehouse around 12:40 a.m. December 21 on a reported suspicious person, or possible burglary in progress. Upon contacting the suspect, he produced a handgun and a struggle for the weapon ensued. As the suspect fled police, at least one officer opened fire, but it has not been disclosed if the suspect was struck. The disappearance of the suspect sparked a nearly 10-hour search in the area. A portion of Irwindale Avenue from West 1st Street to Gladstone Street was blocked. Glendora, Covina, and Baldwin Park Police Departments along with a helicopter aided in a search. A coroner investigation will determine cause of death and an identity. It is unclear if the affected warehouse was occupied during the burglary call. The struggle and officer-involved shooting occurred at Irwindale Avenue and McKinley Avenue around 12:40 a.m. December 21. Officers were searching for a burglary suspect in the 1500 block of McKinley Avenue when they encountered an armed man, according to Lt. Robert Landeros of the Azusa Police Department. The suspect armed himself with a handgun. The officers began struggling with him to get the gun away, Azusa Police said. At least one officer fired upon the suspect as he fled, but is unclear if he was hit. Officers are concentrating their search in an area near Motor Avenue and Paramount Street, according to Paul Arrasmith, who works in the area. Police vehicles, fire trucks and a SWAT truck are at the scene. Employees and trucks nearby the search are being prevented from entering their buildings. A large warehouse about two blocks north of the scene reported an unknown subject was trying to buzz someone through the front door intercom around 11:30 p.m. — about an hour before the shooting. No employees were inside the building at the time. An alert was received about the mysterious person. Irwindale, Glendora, Covina and Baldwin Park Police Officers are assisting with traffic control. It is unknown why the suspect fled from police who initiated a traffic stop at West 3rd Street and North Barbara Avenue December 1. A search of the area, aided by a police helicopter, turned up empty, according to Sgt. Erin Coulter of the Azusa Police Department. The search began some time around 9 p.m. The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle, Coulter said. The search ended before 10:30 p.m. |
