Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Sheriff’s homicide detectives released two sketches Monday of two teens involved in the fatal 2018 shooting of a man in Azusa. Both suspects are described as Hispanic and between 15 and 16 years old. They are believed to be part of the Sentinel Boys Street Gang, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The victim, 36-year-old Abel Balderas, was a resident of the apartment complex where he was gunned down, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Balderas was found critically wounded on the second floor of the building near a doorway around 12:38 a.m. at 625 N. Rockvale Ave., apartment C, Sheriff’s homicide detectives said.

The fire burned in a two-story apartment complex in the 800 block of W. 13th St. Firefighters were dispatched at 9:12 p.m., extinguished the flames at 9:46 p.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Rangel initially told SGV CityWatch that one person perished, but Franklin Lopez of Los Angeles County Fire confirmed the actual number of deaths. KTLA 5 reported a father and his disabled adult son were the people found dead. Cause investigators with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called to examine the fire, Rangel said, adding that there were no injured people transported. One other person was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The cause is still being determined. An adjacent unit has smoke damage and the occupants will be displaced, according to Los Angeles County Firefighters on scene. Officers found the victim in the 100 block of South Virginia Avenue October 23 after being dispatched to a call of a person bleeding. Officers found the man around 11:12 p.m., according to Lt. Robert Chivas of the Azusa Police Department. The man was treated for life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized where he remains in critical condition, Chivas said. There was no suspect description yet given. Anyone with information on the stabbing is urged to call Azusa Police Detective Mario Corona at 636-812-3200. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Drugs and alcohol are not yet believed to be factors in a crash that sent five people to two hospitals Thursday night, an Azusa Police sergeant said. A truck veered off the road and crashed into a light pole while southbound on Azusa Veterans Way around 11:25 p.m. October 17. The truck careened down an embankment and landed in a mangled mess in a small residential parking lot near North Cornejo Way north of Barberry Way. Three of the five occupants were ejected from the truck after it fell roughly 30 feet from the roadway, according to Sgt. Nick Covarrubias of the Azusa Police Department. All five patients were determined to have moderate injuries. Four were transported to a local hospital for treatment, one was taken to a trauma center, according to Dispatch Supervisor Martin Rangel of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Investigators have yet to determine the speed of the truck before the crash, Covarrubias said.
“I don’t know if was speeding or not. They haven’t determined the exact speed yet,” Covarrubias told SGV CityWatch. “As of right now, we don’t believe that alcohol or drugs were involved.” The five people injured were confirmed to be Azusa Pacific University students, according to Shino Simons, vice president for student affairs at Azusa Pacific University. “To safeguard student confidentiality, we are unable to release names or provide further details. Our Student Affairs team will come alongside these students and their loved ones and offer support,” Simons said in a staff email obtained by SGV CityWatch. The fire was burning in the Sylvan Villa Estates, 830 S. Azusa Ave. The fire was officially knocked down as of 5:37 p.m. It is not yet clear if any people were inside the mobile home when the fire ignited. The condition of the dogs is not immediately clear. Animal control officers were called to the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters initially arrived to light smoke coming from a single-wide mobile home and found flames burning within. An intended victim was unscathed in the shooting that was reported to police around 11:53 a.m. A motive remains unknown, according to Sgt. Erin Coulter of the Azusa Police Department. The shooting occurred on Gladstone Street East of Heathdale Avenue October 16, according to Sgt. Tommy Avila of the Azusa Police Department. In all, a gunman in a vehicle fired upon a man, woman and two juveniles inside another vehicle, which was hit by gunfire. Multiple rounds were fired at the victims, but Coulter could not confirm the number of rounds. The incident may have been a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting. To Coulter’s knowledge, there was no damage to any other nearby structures or vehicles. The shooter was last seen fleeing eastbound. Coulter could not provide a description of the suspect. A small 20-foot by 20-foot spot fire sparked just before 11:30 p.m. October 15. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:27 p.m. to the riverbed near the 3400 block of Encanto Parkway, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters declared the fire knocked down at 11:56 p.m. No injuries were reported. The fire’s cause is still being investigated, Ornelas said. It is too soon to tell if the shooting was gang related. Officers responded to calls of gunfire around 7:54 p.m. near Arrow Highway and Vincent Avenue., according to Sgt. Seth Chapman of the Azusa Police Department. “Our officers responded immediately and when they got there they found a male adult victim down on the northeast corner with multiple gunshot wounds to his legs,” Chapman told SGV CityWatch. The victim was taken to an area trauma center for treatment. Officers recovered evidence that the shooting did occur in the immediate area. A description of the gunman was not available. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The man found stranded on the Gold Line bridge overlooking Citrus Avenue was provided homeless outreach services after being rescued, said Sgt. Jason Poulos of the Azusa Police Department. Police and firefighters were dispatched just after 1 p.m. October 5 to the bridge near the APU/Citrus College Station, 905 N. Citrus Ave., to a rescue call. It was initially believed the man was threatening to jump, but the suspicion was quickly denied. Firefighters brought a ladder for the man to climb down from the ledge on the north-facing side of the bridge.
It was not immediately clear why the man was on the ledge. “There was no crime. Nothing rose to that level for us to take any enforcement action,” Poulos said. “We offered homeless outreach.” Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – Glendora Police jailed a theft suspect and took him into custody after he escaped on foot into an Azusa neighborhood. The suspect, wanted for a theft from a vehicle, fled into a neighborhood near Angeleno Avenue and Paramount Street, setting off a multi-agency containment and search, according to Cpl. Tim Crawford of the Glendora Police Department. Eric Matthew Ramirez, 34, was arrested at 2:09 a.m. October 2, according to Los Angeles County booking records. He reportedly kept authorities at bay for at least four hours.
Ramirez is accused of taking property during a theft from a vehicle in Glendora October 1. Detectives tracked Ramirez to Azusa. Ramirez is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail and was booked on suspicion of possession of stolen property, fleeing or delaying an officer and being a felon in possession of stolen property, Crawford said. |
