CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A man was found dead inside a motel room Sunday afternoon. The cause has not been determined yet, but investigators believe nothing suspicious led to the man’s death, according to the Azusa Police Department. First responders were sent to the Super 8 by Wyndham, 117 N. Azusa Ave., around 2 p.m. November 2. It is not immediately clear how long the man, identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as 48-year-old Walnut Creek resident Pavle Males, was in the room before being discovered. The cause of death has been deferred, pending additional investigation. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A small brush fire was extinguished quickly by Los Angeles County and U.S. Forest Service firefighters Thursday. The fire was reported in the San Gabriel River closest to Mirardor Drive and North San Gabriel Canyon Road around 10:43 a.m. October 30. The blaze was contained to about one-quarter of an acre, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire was not deemed arson, but evidence suggested it was connected to a transient camp, according to the Azusa Police Department. A person was detained near the source of the fire and was arrested, but for narcotics-related crimes, according to the Azusa Police Department. A smaller fire was reported around 6:40 a.m. the same day in the river bed further west from the second blaze. The smaller fire was likely a warming fire ignited by a transient, a Los Angeles County Fire Captain told the Azusa Police Department. No structure damage was reported. ********** Copyright 2025. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office officially filed charges regarding an altercation and stabbing at a carnival almost one week ago. Paul Holguin, 45, was charged with one count of attempted murder. He was additionally charged with the special allegation of one or more serious violent felony convictions, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Raymond Escobedo, 21, was charged with one count of being an accessory after the fact. The altercation and stabbing at the carnival, which took place and Memorial Park, 340 N. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two suspects were arrested after a reported gang tussle led to a stabbing October 18. The incident unfolded at the Azusa Golden Days Festival held at Memorial Park, 320 N. Orange Pl. around. 7:30 p.m. Police intervened in the fight between three people. One other three suffered stab wounds, according to the Azusa Police Department. “The other two subjects involved in the fight were arrested for various charges. A knife was located on one of the detained suspects,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. The suspect names were not immediately released. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Police from Azusa and surrounding agencies secured and cleared Azusa High School after a threatening call was made to the campus Tuesday. Officers with weapons drawn surrounded the school, 240 N. Cerritos Ave. video from the scene showed the armed response unfolding around 3:15 p.m. September 23. After a thorough search of the campus was made, the threat was determined to not be credible, according to the Azusa Police Department. Similar threats unfolded at to Upland Unified School District campuses the same day. Upland High School, 565 W. 11th St., and Western Christian High School, 100 W. Ninth St., wen pt on lockdown and were searched after threatening calls were made. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Two suspects who attempted to flee officers after allegedly robbing their victim of cash and other belongings Wednesday night were caught after their vehicle became disabled during a pursuit, police said. Kevin Ochoa, an 19-year-old Los Angeles man, and passenger Daniel Mendoza, an 18-year-old South Gate man, were arrested. The firearm reportedly used in the robbery was also recovered, according to the Azusa Police Department. Police were sent to Zacatecas Park around 10:53 p.m. August 6. Officers located the suspect vehicle and then attempted to pull over the driver, but he allegedly refused to stop and briefly lead police on a pursuit. A helicopter with the Foothill Air Support Team assisted officers on the ground. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Students sheltered in place on the East Campus of Azusa Pacific University Tuesday afternoon while police searched for an armed robbery suspect, campus authorities said. The first notice of a locked was sent to students at 4:42 p.m. August 5. The West Campus was not affected by the search. At 6:11 p.m., the campus was cleared to lift the lockdown, according to Azusa Pacific University authorities. Officers conducted a safety sweep of the Shire Mods, a residence area of the campus. It is not immediately clear if the suspect was apprehended. Multiple calls to an Azusa Police Department supervisor have gone unanswered. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A stolen vehicle was recovered Friday and its driver was arrested after a destructive pursuit, police said. Driver Jose Antonio Hernandez Fitoria sideswiped a semi while fleeing officers along the southbound 605 Freeway at Lower Azusa Road in the early morning hours of April 25. The driver crashed while exiting the freeway and try to run down the on-ramp, according to the Azusa Police Department. Officers received a report of a stolen vehicle and attempted to stop Hernandez while he was driving in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Virginia Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. The vehicle was reported stolen out of Anaheim, according to the Azusa Police Department. It is not immediately clear if Hernandez, or anyone else, suffered injuries in the crash. Hernandez was booked on suspicion of multiple charges, including vehicle theft, felony evading, and driving under the influence, according to the Azusa Police Department. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A convicted felon and gang member was taken into custody without incident March 28, accused of being armed while allegedly igniting a fire inside the Azusa Downtown Metro Station parking structure. Van Nuys resident Mauricio Sanchez, 33, faces one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition and two counts of felony prior convictions under the California “Three Strikes Law,” according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. A caller reported a man lighting an unknown object on fire inside the parking structure, 801 N. Alameda Ave., around 1 p.m. After he was detained and searched, a loaded handgun was found in a bag being carried by Sanchez, according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. “Further investigation revealed that the firearm was a ghost gun, an untraceable weapon that is often assembled from parts. In addition to the firearm, officers also found narcotics paraphernalia in Sanchez’s possession,” according to the Azusa Police Department in a written statement. CityWatch Editor AZUSA - Homicide detectives announced the arrest of a man accused of murdering his parents inside their Azusa home. Gabriel Contreras, a 29-year-old Azusa man, allegedly committed the March 15 murder of parents Linda Rodriguez and Arthur Contreras. Gabriel Contreras was arrested March 19 and booked at the Azusa Police Department jail. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office officially filed two counts each of murder and assault with a firearm, according to the Sheriff’s Department, although the cause of death for both parents was the result of “multiple sharp force injuries,” according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Contreras is being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles ahead of a scheduled appearance in Pomona Superior Court Friday, March 21.
