Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A driver was hospitalized Saturday after another driver unloaded a firearm at him while on the 210 freeway early Saturday. A man from Fontana was eastbound 210 freeway at Irwindale Avenue in a Kia when someone from inside another vehicle began firing at him. Multiple bullets struck the left side of the Kia. The man from Fontana was also wounded in the left leg. He continued to flee eastbound until he stopped at a 7-Eleven in Azusa at 504 S. Citrus Ave, according to the California Highway Patrol. The shooting took place around 1:50 a.m.
“The driver entered the 7-11 and was assisted by the store clerk. The driver was transported to Pomona Valley Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his left leg,” according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. CHP investigators do not have information on the shooter. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A Hispanic man in his 20s died near the on ramp to the eastbound 210 freeway Thursday afternoon, CHP and coroner officials said.
The man was found just before 3:18 p.m. April 9. He was declared dead on arrival, according to Dispatch Supervisor Troy of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A Sig Alert for the on ramp from Vernon Avenue to the eastbound 210 freeway was initiated at 3:53 p.m. Thursday. The Sig Alert was canceled at 1:14 a.m. Friday, according to Officer Patrick Kimball of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. The victim’s name has not been publicly revealed. Next of kin have yet to be notified, according to Lt. Nani Cholakians of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Confusion persists as to which agency is actually handling the investigation. In interviews conducted Thursday night, the California Highway Patrol stated the death was an Azusa Police matter. An Azusa Police supervisor soon after stated that the death was a CHP matter. In a brief interview Friday morning, Kimball stated that the CHP is investigating the death. The cause of death has yet to be revealed. Wednesday night, police were called to a reported shooting victim at that same location after 10 p.m. No victim had been found. It is unclear if Wednesday night’s call and Thursday‘s discovery of a dead man are connected. The crash occurred at the Off-Highway Vehicle area along Highway 39 near East Fork Road around 4:09 p.m. Five people were in the vehicle, according to Officer Peter Nicholson of the California Highway Patrol. Two adults and a child with minor injuries were ultimately taken by helicopter to an area trauma center for treatment, according to Dispatcher Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The two other people inside the overturned vehicle signed out against medical advice, Peters said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A semi driver received injuries considered not life-threatening after allegedly being stabbed by his passenger near the 210 freeway November 30. Azusa Police were called around 7 p.m. to East First Street off near the Azusa Avenue off ramp. The semi crashed for unspecified reasons on the westbound 210 freeway and then exited onto surface streets where a fight between the driver and a passenger began, according to Sgt. Jason Poulos of the Azusa Police Department. The driver crashed into some form of a signal box before exiting in Azusa, Poulos said.
The passenger reportedly fled the scene before police arrived. A suspect remains at-large, Poulos said. The driver was hospitalized. He is being mostly uncooperative with police and provided few details. The California Highway Patrol is also investigating. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The California Highway Patrol is planning to hold a DUI/driver license checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Azusa Friday, May 3. The checkpoint will begin at 7:30 p.m. CHP officers trained in detecting DUI drivers will staff the checkpoint and will be armed with breathalyzers. Drivers should only be detained for a few moments when stopped by an officer, the CHP said. If traffic volume increases, every third or fifth vehicle will be stopped to maintain objectivity, the CHP said. The suspect is detained and is being treated by Los Angeles County Firefighters on the westbound 210 freeway at Azusa Avenue. The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. The suspect became irate, refused to comply with the officer’s commands to stop and began exposing his genitals, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic.
The suspect is possibly suffering from a mental health issue, a CHP officer said. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - A bloodied pedestrian was found near the Vernon Avenue onramp to the westbound 210 freeway Saturday morning. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the location at 8:33 a.m. February 23 and found a vehicle with blood staining the interior and the trunk lid, according to CHP radio traffic. Firefighters also responded to a medical call nearby at 8:34 a.m. to Mountain View Elementary School, 201 N. Vernon Ave., and found a person bleeding from injuries possibly sustained in a freeway collision, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Fuentes. It is unclear if the person found at Mountain View was the same bloodied pedestrian reported on the freeway.
The person at Mountain View was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital for treatment. Either the person found at Mountain View or the vehicle found on the onramp are tied to a Los Angeles Police Department investigation, according to Sgt. Fernando Vasconselos. The sergeant, however, did not immediately know which LAPD division was conducting the investigation. Injuries appeared to be minor, according to Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. The building was not compromised in the crash. The crash occurred at the 7-Eleven, 5575 S. Azusa Ave., just after 10 p.m. The driver reportedly felt light-headed and could not stop her vehicle, according to preliminary information provided by the California Highway Patrol. Injuries appeared to be minor, according to Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. The building was not compromised in the crash. The collision was reported around 3:45 p.m. A Sig Alert was originally issued for 45 minutes for the No. 1 and 2 lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol, and was cancelled about one hour later. The number of injuries was unknown, according to Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the CHP and Dispatch Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. At least one injured person was found laying in traffic lanes. No one with major injuries was transported, Peters said. One vehicle overturned in the crash and possibly came rest in eastbound lanes, according to the CHP. A blue Toyota Tundra and Ford F150 both suffered severe damage to their axles and require a tow truck. At least one person was injured in the crash, which was reported just after 2 p.m. December 29 in the No. 3 and 4 lanes. The Citrus Avenue on ramp to the west 210 freeway is also closed, the CHP said. One of the semi truck drivers was transported to an area hospital in unknown condition, according to the CHP Traffic Management Center. Possibly as many as five other vehicles are involved in the crash. The CHP is requesting to have the semi trucks hauled away. One of the semi trucks was hauling at least 40,000 to 50,000 pounds of products. |
