The publicly unidentified man suffered from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. A non-specific bomb threat was phoned in by a male suspect to Target, 809 N. Azusa Ave., 8:28 a.m. December 3, according to Sgt. Seth Chapman of the Azusa Police Department. Officers closed off traffic in the 800 block of North Azusa Avenue, 800 block of North San Gabriel Avenue and the 100 block of West Ninth Street, Chapman told SGV CityWatch. A detection K9 from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived to search the area, but nothing was found, Chapman told SGV CityWatch. Roadways were opened by 10:09 a.m. Chapman told SGV CityWatch. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA - The 25-year-old driver of a reported stolen vehicle was listed in critical condition late Friday night after being shot by police and crashing a black SUV into a flood control channel. The unidentified suspect, in his attempt to escape police, collided into several patrol vehicles and accelerated towards Azusa officers who opened fire on him, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Around 4:50 p.m. October 22, Azusa officers were notified of a stolen vehicle in the 200 block of South Azusa Avenue. Officers located the reported stolen vehicle and attempted to detain the driver and a female occupant. The driver decided to flee. “The suspect vehicle continued eastbound on Azusa Lane as it lost control and collided into a chain link fence and entered a drainage wash. The vehicle came to rest on its side at the bottom of the wash as Azusa PD officers contained the area. With the assistance of their SWAT team, they were able to take the suspect into custody,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The SUV landed in a twisted wreck at the bottom of the wet and filthy flood control channel. The 28-year-old woman had emerged from the wreck and was first detained by authorities who arrived in a Bearcat into the channel. The suspect appeared to have been ejected in the crash and was very severely injured as officers approached and detained him. A handgun was found near the crashed vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Both the woman and the suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound, were hospitalized. Ryan Serna, 28, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. His place of death was a sidewalk. The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the 300 block of North San Gabriel Avenue near West 3rd Street. Azusa Police officers responded to a report of gunfire and found Serna wounded from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Serna died at the scene. It is not publicly clear if Sheriff’s Homicide investigators have identified a suspect, or if a suspect is in custody. A coroner exam for Serna has yet to be scheduled. The incident occurred near North San Gabriel Boulevard and West Third Street. The victim died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Firefighters were called to the scene around 8:30 p.m. to the 200 block of North San Gabriel Avenue by the Azusa Police Department. Firefighters were cleared in after the scene was secured at 8:35 p.m., according to Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The driver led deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Diamond Bar/Walnut Station and Fountain Valley Police on a high-speed chase beginning in the area of the 60 freeway eastbound just before the 57 interchange. Fountain Valley Police requested the assistance of deputies in the pursuit around 5:50 a.m., according to Sgt. Sarabia of the Sheriff’s Walnut Station. The pursuit eventually found its way to the 71 freeway where the suspect lead authorities northbound to the 57 freeway close to 100 miles per hour, according to Sheriff’s radio traffic. The pursuit entered Glendora from the west 210 freeway, north on Glendora Avenue and through residential neighborhoods where, at one point, the driver tried to evade authorities by driving through Finkbiner Park, 160 N. Wabash Ave. The driver fled westbound along route 66 from Glendora and into Azusa on Alosta Avenue and Foothill Boulevard where the driver then voluntarily stopped in front of a CVS, 101 W. Foothill Blvd. The female driver and male passenger were arrested without incident by Walnut deputies assisted by the sheriffs Special Enforcement Bureau and K9 unit. Booking information for both suspects was not readily available at the time the story was posted. Both suspects are still in the process of being booked, Sarabia told SGV CityWatch. A supervisor with the Fountain Valley Police Department has yet to return a phone call seeking additional details regarding the crimes the primary suspect was wanted for. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – Paramedics and deputies worked to save a man found not breathing on the platform of the APU/Citrus College Station Tuesday, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Deputies performing train and platform inspections around 12:12 a.m. July 14 saw the man, only described as white or Hispanic, and checked to see if he was alright, according to Ramon Montenegro, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. “They saw a man on the train platform that did not appear to be moving. They checked his breathing, his pulse and there was no breathing and pulse,” Montenegro told SGV CityWatch. “They immediately called for fire paramedics. They began CPR right away. Fire paramedics got there and continued, unfortunately the man didn’t make it.” There are no apparent signs of foul play, Montenegro told SGV CityWatch. Train service between the Azusa Downtown Station and APU/Citrus College Station was temporarily stopped during the investigation, but has since resumed, according to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner will determine cause of death. James Paul Williams, 39, allegedly assaulted a male at the Citrus College/APU Station, 905 N. Citrus Ave., June 28 around 3:53 a.m. The victim suffered neck and face wounds, but is expected to recover, according to the Azusa Police Department. The suspect was gone when police arrived. Azusa officers worked with deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau to locate evidence, identify a suspect and locate witnesses. Ultimately, Williams was pegged as a suspect, Azusa Police said. A Transit Services deputy recognized Williams June 30 at the Citrus College/APU Station. Williams was taken into custody by the Azusa Police Department. Williams was arrested at 2:48 a.m., according to Los Angeles County booking records and is scheduled for an appearance in the West Covina courthouse July 2. The shooting took place in the 900 block of W. Sierra Madre Ave. around 12:50 p.m. June 27. The suspect died at the scene. Is not yet clear what led up to the gunfire. All westbound traffic at Vernon Avenue and Sierra Madre Ave. is closed, according to the Azusa Police Department. Police arrived to the Westgate Villa apartment complex, 563 E. Arrow Hwy., around 3:30 p.m. to a disturbance call and learned an injured man was potentially being held against his will, said Cpt. Robert Landeros of the Azusa Police Department. The suspect was holed up in one of the second-story units. Los Angeles County mental health evaluators assisted crisis negotiators in attempting to speak with anyone inside the unit. Covina Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies also assisted. “As the incident progressed, the suspect inside was able to let the victim go. He was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital for some serious injuries,” Landeros told SGV CityWatch. At the time of interview Tuesday night, a motive for the incident was not known. Azusa Police used less lethal rounds, including flash bang grenades and pepper balls to get the suspect to surrender peacefully. Residents of the apartment complex and neighbors bore witness to the attempts to capture the suspect. The loud booms of the flash bang grenades echoed throughout surrounding neighborhoods. Smoke occasionally wafted out of the apartment unit targeted by police after they used an armored truck to shatter several windows to gain access to the unit. No officers or other residents were injured, Landeros said. Herman Hormel Murphy, 57, was booked on felony-level charges. He is being held in lieu of $135,000 bail ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina courthouse June 24, according to Los Angeles County booking records. |
