Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor COVINA - The younger brother of a man killed in a Sunday shooting was arrested the day of his kin’s death and is involved in the confrontation that led to the fatal shooting, police announced Tuesday. Pomona man Rick Ortega, 26, was arrested May 31. Police did not state specifically Ortega’s roll in the shooting death. Officers arriving to a report of a man firing a handgun and call of a man down found a victim critically wounded in the 1100 block of Wanamaker Drive by Nearglen Avenue. Officers found a victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his back, according to Lt. Ryan Davis of the Covina Police Department. The victim died at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Police were called to the scene at 12:22 p.m. The victim was found on a breezeway between two apartment buildings, according to Sgt. Keith Sutherland of the Covina Police Department.
Davis did not immediately know what led to the argument, but said there was evidence that multiple people were firing at each other. A handgun was recovered at the scene. At least four people were involved in the incident, Sutherland told SGV CityWatch. Suspects are still outstanding. Two homes were struck by gunfire. There was no evidence of additional injuries. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Covina Police Detective Gonzales at 626-384-5622, or email dgonzales@covinaca.gov. |
