Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A call of a burglary in progress April 24 led to the arrest of an armed suspect, police said. Joseph Edward Butkiewicz, a 30-year-old San Bernardino transient, was taken into custody after officers detained him at a self-storage facility on Central Avenue Friday. A storage unit was discovered broken and Butkiewicz was removing property within, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. Officers also discovered a loaded and concealed handgun on Butkiewicz along with extra gun clips, methamphetamine and a security officer badge, Gatto said.
“It was also learned that the suspect was a convicted and wanted felon who had absconded from parole. He also had several additional warrants for his arrest from both Los Angeles and San Bernardino County,” Gatto said in a written statement. Detectives connected Butkiewicz to a burglary at the same self-storage facility in mid-March, Gatto said. Butkiewicz was booked on suspicion of commercial burglary, possession of a concealed firearm, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a controlled substance, giving false identity information to a peace officer and for several outstanding warrants, including a no-bail warrant for being a parolee-at-large. Butkiewicz is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail ahead of a scheduled court appearance today, April 28. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A La Puente man was taken into custody April 19 after police discovered he was a convicted and wanted felon who was also in possession of a handgun.
Officers responded to a business in the 15500 block of Arrow Highway around 7:20 p.m. Sunday and detained several people at the business. During an investigation police discovered a concealed handgun on one of the subjects, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Officers determined armed suspect Antonio Torres Jr., A 49-year-old La Puente man, was not only a convicted and wanted felon, but he also absconded from parole, Irwindale police said. Torres was booked on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition and for a parolee-at-large warrant. Torres was medically cleared at a local hospital before being booked at the Irwindale Police Department. Due to coronavirus restrictions, Torres was issued a citation and released, Irwindale Police said. Officers determined no burglary had occurred at the business and the other subjects were released at the scene. Officers responded to a reported burglary in progress at 11:23 p.m. April 18 in the 5100 block of Irwindale Avenue. Both suspects ran from officers, but they were caught a short distance away, according to the Irwindale Police Department. In addition to the bolt cutters, the suspects used other tools, including two way radios to communicate with each other, police said. Anthony Celest Pena, a 19-year-old El Monte man, and Daniel Lozano, a 24-year-old Los Angeles man, were booked on suspicion of burglary, possession of burglary tools and probation violations. Both were booked in the West Covina jail. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, both subjects were later released on citations, pending their court appearances, Irwindale Police said. |
