Nearly 50 pounds of suspected methamphetamine was discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The traffic stop was conducted in the 100 block of West Sierra Madre Avenue in Azusa as part of an ongoing investigation, according to Sgt. Cornejo of the Irwindale Police Department. Jose Carrillo Galaviz, a 52-year-old Los Angeles man, was arrested on suspicion of various drug sales and drug transportation charges. He was transported to jail, booked, issued a citation and released due to zero bail provisions, according to the Irwindale Police Department. A Jan’s Towing employee discovered the man’s body around 12:30 p.m. once the vehicle was taken to the tow yard, 1045 W. Kirkwall Rd., in Azusa, April 26. Irwindale officers arrived, searched the vehicle and discovered the body of a woman, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The vehicle was towed from an Arco gas station At 110 E. Longden Rd. at the request of the property owner. Irwindale police detectives conducted investigations at the tow yard and at the gas station. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics formally declared both the man and woman dead at the scene. The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County coroner. The driver fled a collision with another vehicle at Irwindale Avenue and Arrow Highway November 11. The Driver of the vehicle that was struck followed the big rig into Azusa where the suspect escaped on foot, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The big rig was reported stolen to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The trailer, packed with electronics, was freshly stolen from an Irwindale Business. “Both vehicles were recovered to be released to their owners,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement. Matthew Thomas Dyer, 46, was arrested and booker on suspicion of felony arson. Tips from the community also helped lead to Dyer’s arrest, according to the Irwindale Police Department. After the Jeep SUV Fire was extinguished Friday morning, officers learned the vehicle was stolen in Azusa September 24, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Dyer was released on a citation due to Los Angeles County’s “zero bail” policy, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The destroyed Jeep was towed away and returned to the owner. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Investigators made eight arrests and seized more than 1.5 tons of illegal fireworks after receiving tips from the community on the selling of the contraband, police said. The investigations have been taking place since June. Police were told that the illegal fireworks were being sold through online means. The fireworks seized will be appropriately disposed of, Irwindale police said. “Unauthorized fireworks are not only illegal, but they are extremely dangerous and are disruptive to our community. Each Independence Day holiday, illegal fireworks lead to fires, injuries and property damage in the city of Irwindale and result in a number of complaints to the police department,” Irwindale Police said. Irwindale officers were called to investigate the suspicious vehicle parked in the area of Irwindale Avenue and the 210 freeway. As officers approached, the suspect took off and officers pursued him, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The suspect evading officers recklessly through Irwindale and Azusa. During the freeway portion of the chase a suspect use the right shoulder the bypass traffic and ran through traffic signals and curbs on surface streets. The driver, later identified as Cesar Nunez, 36, stopped in the 200 block of North Azusa Avenue in the city of Azusa and was taken into custody. County booking information was not readily available. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - An Azusa man was taken to a local trauma center with a gunshot wound, one that he reportedly received on the southbound 605 freeway, Saturday night.
The shooting reportedly took place on the southbound 605 north of Arrow Highway around 11:23 p.m. June 5. The 30-year-old Azusa man was shot once, according to the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. The suspect was described as a man on a black motorcycle and wearing a black vest. A handgun was reportedly used, according to the California Highway Patrol. While possibly having been shot north of Arrow Highway on the freeway, the victim likely ended up closer to Lower Azusa Road. CHP officers arrived to the southbound 605 freeway at Lower Azusa and reported a gunshot victim there, according to CHP radio traffic. Los Angeles County firefighters were also dispatched to the southbound 605 freeway at Lower Azusa Road, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch posts. This is the second shooting incident to have taken place on the southbound 605 freeway in the area Saturday. Earlier in the afternoon, a white BMW crashed into the center divider at Lower Azusa Road just after 5 p.m.. The victims claim they were shot at. A search of the freeway later yielded evidence that a shooting did take place, according to the California Highway Patrol. The suspects, both from Azusa, were stopped by a patrol officer in the 15700 block of Gladstone Street. More than 330 grams of marijuana, several grams of methamphetamine, multiple vials of liquid narcotics, several items of drug paraphernalia and 82 hypodermic needles were discovered, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Also seized were brass knuckles and realistic airsoft guns. Arrested were Royer Ruiz, 22, and Clemente Bentura Mariano, 38, booked on various drug and weapons charges, including outstanding arrest warrants. Both men were later released in citations due to the COVID-19 jail housing restrictions, Irwindale police said. Javier Prado, 31, was found after investigators located his Ford F-150 Raptor in the 1100 block of Newburgh Street in Azusa. He was arrested without incident, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Prado was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and was held in lieu of $50,000 bail, Irwindale Police said. Prado is accused of fatally striking a pedestrian in northbound lanes of North Irwindale Avenue at the 210 freeway just before 5:30 a.m. February 9. A passerby reported a man down on the asphalt, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighter paramedics worked on the victim and transported him to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he later died. The victim’s identity is not yet publicly revealed. He is only described as being in his 50s, according to Sarah Ardalani, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Prado was issued a citation and released at 5:30 p.m. He is scheduled to appear in the West Covina courthouse February 16, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Firefighters made quick work of a small blaze that ignited inside of a gondola car on a freight train rolling through Irwindale Wednesday morning.
Firefighters had easy access to knock out the flames after the train paused near 15546 East Arrow Highway around 1:08 a.m. December 23. The fire was contained to one gondola and burned only cardboard content, according to the Irwindale Police Department. No injuries were reported. The gondolas appeared to be carrying large rolls of wire from one of the businesses to the east of Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area. The affected railroad line is a spur line operated by Union Pacific Railroad. Trains originate out of the Union Pacific rail yard based in Industry and follow the Metrolink passenger line up into West Covina where the spur line branches off near Azusa Canyon Road south of Arrow Highway. The spur line, dubbed the Azusa Branch, was once part of the Pacific Electric Railway and was extended after a previous “Red Car” line from Los Angeles to Glendora ceased operations in the early 1950s. The Azusa branch services one or more businesses east of Santa Fe Dam and also services a business up in the northern end of Azusa. |
