Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Police are hoping to reunite a discarded brass urn found west of the Metro Gold Station with the family it belongs to. Officers conducting an unrelated investigation along the freight tracks discovered a heart-shaped brass box containing the urn about a half mile west of the Irwindale Gold Line Station near the Miller Coors plant, according to Detective Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. The box and urn were found just before 8:30 p.m. No one was in the area when officers found it. The box and urn were booked in the Irwindale Police property room. There is no identifying information located on the box or urn. The latter is engraved with the phrase “Beloved Mother,” and a date of birth and death.
Police have yet to link the urn to a crime. The box is 3 inches tall and 5 inches in length and width with a brown plaque on top. The box’s interior is lined with red velvet. Alexandra Molina was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. She died of blunt head trauma and the manner of death was ruled accidental. The collision occurred at Rivergrade Road and Live Oak Avenue Saturday, June 1 around 4:22 p.m. A northbound 2014 Volkswagen sedan collided with a westbound 2018 Dodge Challenger. The driver of the sedan was ejected from the car, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. The driver of the sedan, Molina, died at the scene. An on-duty California Highway Patrol officer was parked at a nearby Shell gas station. The officer was summoned by witnesses to the crash and arrived within seconds with Irwindale officers following shortly, Gatto said.
Both vehicles ended on the sidewalk of the northwest corner of Rivergrade and Live Oak. The adult driver and adult passenger in the Dodge Challenger were not hospitalized, Gatto said. The occupants of the Challenger are cooperating with investigators. Rivergrade Road from Stewart Avenue to Live Oak remained closed for six hours during the investigation. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Any witnesses to the collision are urged to call Irwindale Police Detective Corporal Lopez at 626-430-2290. Reference case number 19-0718. The crash was dispatched to firefighters at 4:25 p.m. June 1 in the 5100 block of Rivergrade Road. Firefighters declared one victim dead on arrival, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imogene McBride of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
