CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A Toyota Corolla crashed, killing the front passenger and injuring the driver early Monday morning. The crash occurred in southbound lanes of Irwindale Avenue just north of Ornelas Street just before 12:30 a.m. January 13. The Corolla struck the western curb and rolled over in front of a business in the 5400 block of Irwindale Avenue, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics declared the passenger dead at the scene. The driver was taken to a hospital. The driver and passenger were the only people inside the crashed car. No other vehicles were involved. It is unclear what caused the driver to crash. The driver of a green SUV reportedly struck and killed the pedestrian who, according to initial reports, was running across lanes of the westbound 210 freeway Near Irwindale Ave.October 1. CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A 29-year-old stolen vehicle suspect was booked on suspicion of murder July 9, accused of crashing into and killing a bicyclist on Arrow Highway near Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area. Jonathan Del Carmen Calixto, a Hanford resident, was allegedly driving the stolen white Land Rover eastbound on Arrow Highway when he collided with the bicyclist near the spillway to Santa Fe Dam around 8:31 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Irwindale Police Department. after crashing, Calixto fled the vehicle, but was caught and taken into custody. The bicyclist was identified as 50-year-old Raul Castaneda, a San Gabriel resident. Castaneda was in the marked pedestrian crosswalk when struck, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The marked crosswalk is controlled with traffic signals and further marked by flashing yellow lights warning drivers of the approaching crosswalk. The Land Rover was originally pursued by El Monte Police after the El Monte Police Department received a call of a vehicle theft in progress at a dealership on nearby Peck Road. CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives are assisting the Irwindale Police Department with a shooting death Sunday. The incident unfolded near the 605 freeway south of the 210 freeway around 10:30 a.m. May 26. The victim, only described as a male adult, was declared dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The exact circumstances surrounding the homicide are not publicly known. The California Highway Patrol has intermittently shut down the transition roads from the east 210 and west 210 freeway to the southbound 605, as well as the Arrow Highway on ramp to the north 605 freeway and Mt. Olive on ramp to the southbound 605 freeway during the operation. SGV CityWatch readers who traversed the freeway closures witnessed police in tactical gear, guns trained on an unspecified target. CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A man was found dead Wednesday under the 210 freeway in the northern portion of Irwindale. First responders were called around 1:44 p.m. regarding a man found unresponsive on a dirt access road near the Bradbury flood control channel under the 210 freeway in the 2300 block of Central Avenue. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics declared the man dead at the scene, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Irwindale detectives are determining what led up to the man’s death, while investigators with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner are determining the cause. Investigators believe an illegal butane honey oil extraction lab was being operated inside the warehouse At 1418 E. Arrow Highway. Witnesses reported that at least one individual fully-engulfed in flames was seen running from the building. After the fire was extinguished, the charred remains of three males were found, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The person seen running from the building was found nearby. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, but later died. “Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, an outside law enforcement task force was requested, responded to the scene and took over the investigation. The investigation as to the cause of the fire is ongoing,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement. The crash was reported to first responders on Arrow Highway at Morada Street around 7:10 p.m. August 18. The rider on a 2021 Honda Rebel was westbound on Arrow Highway. The motorcycle crashed into the 2014 Honda Civic, which was turning west onto Arrow from southbound Morada Street, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics declared the motorcyclist dead at the scene. He was only described as a male adult. The driver of the Honda Civic remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. It is not yet clear if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Arrow Highway from Vincent Avenue to Ayon Avenue was closed for five hours during an investigation by the Irwindale Police Department, which was assisted by the Baldwin Park, Azusa and Glendora police departments. John Shin, a 33-year-old Baldwin Park man, was found at his home in the 5000 block of Azusa Canyon Road just before 2:30 a.m. April 30. Detectives spoke with the resident and after questioning, arrested Shin as the hit and run suspect, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Shin was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. Shin posted $50,000 bond and was released from custody. His vehicle, which was towed from his home, is being held as evidence, according to the Irwindale Police Department. A Jan’s Towing employee discovered the man’s body around 12:30 p.m. once the vehicle was taken to the tow yard, 1045 W. Kirkwall Rd., in Azusa, April 26. Irwindale officers arrived, searched the vehicle and discovered the body of a woman, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The vehicle was towed from an Arco gas station At 110 E. Longden Rd. at the request of the property owner. Irwindale police detectives conducted investigations at the tow yard and at the gas station. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics formally declared both the man and woman dead at the scene. The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County coroner.
