IRWINDALE - An envelope that visually looked suspicious was later found to pose no threat at a City of Hope Facility Tuesday.
Staff at a mail processing location at the City of Hope FLASH building, 2240 Buena Vista St., thought the way the envelope was addressed and labeled looked suspicious while screening incoming mail, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department.
Supervisors at the Facilities, Logistics and Support Hub notified police and Los Angeles County firefighters. Emergency protocols at the facility were initiated, which included evacuation of about 100 employees, Gatto said.
Irwindale Police, firefighters, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives Detail and Sheriff’s Hazmat Detail determined no crime was committed.
“There were no explosives, no hazardous materials inside. It was basically something that would have normally been sent to them,” Gatto said.
Authorities cleared the area around 5:20 p.m.
The FLASH building, which has an Irwindale address on the Duarte border, is separate from the City of Hope hospital. Hospital operations were not impacted.
