First responders were sent to North Donna Beth Avenue south of East Renwick Avenue just before 3:30 p.m. December 6. At least two victims were found. It is unclear if anyone else was wounded, according to dispatch supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A unidentified male juvenile died after being taken to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. It is unclear if a suspect is in custody, or if investigators have identified any suspects. The shooting is the latest in continuing violence in a neighborhood that saw a young driver shot while eastbound on Newburgh Street from North Donna Beth Avenue just two days prior. That driver, who still remains unidentified, was shot at least once and crashed while fleeing at high speed through the neighborhood. Strangely enough, this December 6 shooting occurred likely in the same area where the driver was shot December 5. Azusa Police officers were called to a traffic collision in the 17700 block of East Newburgh Street just before 10 a.m. December 5. The unidentified victim, only described as being 18 to 25 years old, was found suffering at least one gunshot, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. KTLA 5 reporters discovered Facebook video from the man who was shot. He was on a livestream as he drove east on Newburgh Street. A single shot struck the man and his vehicle careened head on into a parked truck. An initial report provided to the California Highway Patrol indicated that at least one or more of the vehicles involved in the crash had caught on fire. First responders began providing CPR to the man who was shot before he was transported to a local hospital. Investigators believe that the shooting occurred near the intersection of East Newburgh Street and North Donna Beth Avenue, roughly one block west of where the crash occurred. Either investigators do not know where the shot came from, or have not yet publicly revealed information leading to a suspect. Andrew Hidalgo was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. He died from multiple gunshot wounds. His death is listed as a homicide. Hidalgo was allegedly spray painting graffiti in an Azusa neighborhood Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Hidalgo was found by Azusa Police officers in the 200 block of South Noble Place, June 2 around 3:23 p.m. He was transported to a hospital and died the next day, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators later identified two suspects in the shooting and both are now in custody. Their names have not been publicly released. There are a few details available, but a high-risk stop was performed on Vernon Avenue near the 210 freeway March 25. Video recorded by an SGV CityWatch reader of the active scene at 11:48 a.m. shows the tail end of the high-risk stop where the suspect was taken into custody. A large number of unmarked Pasadena detective vehicles surrounded the suspects car. “This guy was a murder suspect and our undercover units had him under surveillance. As soon as he came off the freeway the decision was made to do a traffic stop,” according to Lt. Chris Sharma of the Pasadena Police Department. The details as to what murder case the suspect was wanted for were not available Friday night. Out of all the drivers to be screened, one was arrested, but for a no-bail warrant for first-degree murder charges, according to the Azusa Police Department. During the checkpoint, 797 vehicles were screened. Officers impounded two vehicles, issued three citations, conducted three field sobriety tests and arrested one driver, according to the Azusa Police Department. The checkpoint took place in the 1400 block of North San Gabriel Avenue. Officer Jesse Landa Of the Azusa Police Department did not have any arrest details for the suspect taken for the first-degree murder, no-bail warrant. It was a federal warrant issued for the suspect and no details were provided to the Azusa Police Department due to the significance of the investigation, Landa told SGV CityWatch. Manuel Banuelos, 24, is scheduled for arraignment at Pomona Superior Court, June 29. He previously pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records. The attack occurred June 10, 2020, outside Target, 809 N. Azusa Ave. Police responded to the scene around 2:15 p.m. and found a victim bleeding from head injuries and unresponsive. After being treated at the scene, the victim was taken to a hospital where he later died, according to the Azusa Police Department. A suspect, who prosecutors allege is Banuelos, was found nearby, chased briefly by police and taken into custody after bystanders helped officers locate him. The victim was identified as Richard Jaimez, Jr., a 37-year-old Azusa man. A motive for the murder remains unclear. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor AZUSA – A man from La Puente and a Rowland Heights man were arrested in recent months for their involvement in a deadly shooting. La Puente man Emmanuel Marquez, 19, and Rowland Heights man Sebastian Garcia, 18, were both booked on suspicion of murder in the 2019 death of John Medrano who was gunned down in broad daylight. A documented gang member, Marquez was also booked for the attempted murder of a teen that was with Medrano when bullets began flying in the 400 block of South Azusa Avenue July 14, 2019. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Azusa Police Department worked together to make the arrests. The shooting unfolded near a bus stop on the northeast corner of Azusa Avenue and Gladstone Street near the Sketchers Outlet. Medrano, 24, was wounded multiple times and later died at a hospital. The intended teen victim was uninjured, Azusa Police said. Marquez was arrested July 21. Garcia was arrested August 20. In June, police announced the arrest of the driver of a black 2017 Toyota Corolla 4-DR believed to be the vehicle involved in the shooting. The unnamed driver was identified, located and taken into custody, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which declined to provide more details on the arrest. Investigators released a composite sketch recently of the man believed to have pulled the trigger in the deadly July 14, 2019 Azusa shooting. The crime unfolded at 7:44 p.m. in the 400 block of South Azusa Avenue just north of Gladstone Street. John Medrano, 24, was struck by gunfire while walking with a teen boy. The suspect is believed to be a Sentinel Boys gang member. The trigger man exited a black 2017 Toyota Corolla 4-DR, opened fire, got back in the car and fled, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Medrano was hospitalized, but later died. The boy was uninjured, homicide investigators said.
The Corolla was driven away eastbound on Gladstone Street. A witness to the shooting helped investigators develop the composite sketch. The suspect is only described as a Hispanic man in his 20s and stands 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. A partial license plate of “924” was obtained, investigators said. The suspect, 23-year-old Manuel Banuelos of Pasadena, was found and arrested a short distance from the beating at 809 N. Azusa Ave. June 10. The victim was hospitalized after being treated by paramedics at the scene, but later died, according to the Azusa Police Department. The attack occurred around 2:14 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Officers found the unidentified victim bleeding from the head, Azusa Police said in a written statement. Bystanders helped Azusa officers locate Banuelos, who was booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held in the Azusa City jail without bail, Azusa Police said. Banuelos is scheduled for an appearance in court June 12. |
