The fire burned in the 4500 block of Jerry Avenue at 10:30 p.m. April 25. A witness called police after seeing a substantial amount of smoke in the area. After locating the home, police ordered the occupants out, but they refused, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Baldwin Park Police Department. “The fire department showed up and they advised us they are not going to address the fire until we could address their safety, because of the subjects who weren’t coming out,” Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch.
The home is known to officers as a location frequented by gang members, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. While officers cleared the perimeter of the home, a neighbor said four people fled the rear of the home where the mattress burned, Gonzalez told SGV CityWatch. Those four occupants fled northeast from the house and did not return that night, Gonzalez told SGV City Watch. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which was likely accidental. Officers received a tip that suspect Johnwill Baldonado, 30, was selling the masks at a grossly-inflated price online in Baldwin Park. Investigators worked under cover, purchased a mask from Baldonado and then took him into custody, according to the Baldwin Park Police department. An initial online ad by Baldonado has been taken down, but two more ads were subsequently posted. All the ads were very similar to each other and appeared to have been written by the same person, Baldwin park police said. 21 boxes containing a total of 420 N95 masks were confiscated by police. “During a state of emergency the law prohibits charging a price that is more than 10% what an item cost before the state declaration of emergency,” Walden Park police said in a written statement. Baldonado was booked on suspicion of price gouging during a declared emergency. He was issued a citation and released on a written promise to appear in court. |
