CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - Things went back to normal Monday afternoon after a caller threatened two adjacent banks with explosive devices, police said. The unidentified caller phoned the corporate offices of Chase Bank, 14483 E. Ramona Blvd., and Bank of America, 14401 E. Ramona Blvd. The Baldwin Park Police Department was notified around 1:13 p.m. December 22. The banks’ corporate offices ordered employees to evacuate as a precaution. An El Pollo Loco, which sits between the banks, was evacuated by police, according to Lt. Evan Martin of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The West Covina Police Department assisted by providing a K9 unit to help with searches, while the Irwindale Police Department assisted with providing traffic control. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - Multiple suspects were arrested after police served a search warrant and uncovered a marijuana grow operation December 15. A report of suspicious activity was made in the 3800 block of Downing Avenue. Patrol officers and detectives witnessed activity they say is consistent with a marijuana operation, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Upon serving the search warrant, police detained several suspects and marijuana was seized along with a weapon. The alleged illicit marijuana cultivators also bypassed electric conduits to steal electricity for their operation. “The detained individuals were subsequently arrested on charges related to illegal marijuana cultivation, weapons violations, and utility theft,” according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A shocking crime unfolded before sunrise November 17 after a shooting claimed two adult family members and wounded a child. The shootings are said to have been perpetrated by Qihao Jin, 35, who is estranged from his wife and targeted her family in the 12700 block of Royston Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. First responders were called to a report of a suspicious person and possible death at the home. Officers were met by three family members, two men and a boy, who said a shooting took place with victims down. Two adults and a 10-year-old girl were found wounded. Despite being given aid, the adults died. The girl survived and remains hospitalized, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The deceased victims are 61-year-old female Yulan Wang, and her husband, 61-year-old male, Qiufu Jiang. Jin’s wife was not at the home where the shooting occurred. Investigators identified Qihao Jin as a suspect and identified a vehicle late Monday night used to flee the shooting scene. An alert to local agencies was distributed. Jin was located in his vehicle in the 100 block of Vermont Street in the city of Anaheim, where Anaheim officers found Jin dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - Investigators are piecing together the details of a shooting in a Baldwin Park neighborhood Monday. First responders were sent to the 12700 block of Royston Street around 5 a.m. November 17. Firefighters arrived at 5:22 a.m. and transported one patient to a hospital at 5:57 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A former police officer has been officially charged with 29 felony counts of grand theft related to the shocking theft of more than $104,000 from Baldwin Park Police Association Union funds. Andres Villalobos, 35, is accused of transferring the cash from from the Association’s account into his personal account, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He was taken into custody November 6. After being elected treasurer in 2021, Villalobos is accused of making the transfers over an 18-month period from July 2022 to August 2023. He has since been terminated. When he was arrested, Villalobos was discovered to have in his possession two law enforcement flash-bang grenades. He was additionally charged with two felony counts of possession of a destructive device or explosive and one felony count of commercial burglary, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He faces nearly 27 years in state prison if convicted as charged. Villalobos was arraigned November 10. He pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing setting is scheduled for Nov. 24 in Department 132 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Baldwin Park Police detectives recovered around $2,000 in stolen merchandise from the Baldwin Park store and other stores from the San Gabriel Valley, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The latest grand theft of merchandise occurred August 26 at WSS, 3151 Baldwin Park Boulevard. While following up on the leads, detectives located and stopped a suspect vehicle. Two suspects involved in the theft were arrested and $1,100 in stolen merchandise was recovered, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Detectives ventured to a home and a search warrant yielded additional arrests and more recovered merchandise. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A woman walking in freeway lanes was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene of the crash Wednesday. An unknown vehicle struck the woman who was walking northbound across the No. 1 lane of the westbound I-10 freeway west of White Avenue around 3:18 a.m. The woman was propelled into the No. 2 lane where another driver hit her, according to the CHP. The woman died at the scene. She has yet to be identified publicly. The second driver, who was behind the wheel of a 2006 GMC Savana, stayed at the scene. Westbound freeway lanes were closed just before 4 a.m. and were reopened just after 8 a.m. Anyone with information on the hit and run driver is urged to call California Highway Patrol Officer V. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A known gang member was jailed with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service, accused of brandishing a firearm. Two victims reported a man brandished a handgun at them near the Puente Avenue off ramp at the westbound I-10 freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. Investigators with the CHP Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team and U.S. Marshals identified and tracked down the suspect to West Covina. “During the arrest, officers recovered a loaded, unregistered firearm. The suspect, a self-admitted gang member, now faces multiple felony charges, according to the CHP Baldwin Park Office. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the suspect. CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - Arraignment is expected to continue Friday for the suspect in the Baldwin Park shooting that killed two men, including a police officer, and the wounding of two other officers. Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, 22, was charged with two counts of murder in the first degree, two counts of premeditated attempted murder and one count of possessing an assault weapon. Medina was additionally charged with special circumstances, including murder for financial gain, murder of a peace officer engaged in duties, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, and multiple murders. Proceedings were held in Department N of Pomona Superior Court June 5 and are expected to be held again Friday, June 6. Medina is accused of murdering Baldwin Park Police officer Samuel Riveros and 43-year-old Darius Wong. Medina is accused of attempted murder against Baldwin Park officer Anthony Pimentel and officer Alfredo Leal. Pimentel was apparently wounded by flying shards of glass launched by bullets intended to kill him. Leal was struck by gunfire, Hochman said. “Sam was a dedicated officer who represented our department with dignity and honor. In the face of danger, Sam selflessly put the safety of others before his own and gave his life doing so,” said Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez. Wong, a Hacienda Heights resident, dropped off his wife, two daughters and sister-in-law at a family party and sought parking nearby. He apparently was shot in the back. Donate to His Gofundme>> A .223 assault weapon was seized from the scene of the shooting, and 40-60 expended shell casings were also found, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Two high-capacity gun clips were also found at the scene, Chief Luna said, adding that Sheriff’s investigators are determining who owns the weapon and if it was legally purchased. Officers Pimentel and Leal arrived separately to a reported shooting in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue around 7:12 p.m. May 31 and were fired upon. Both officers returned fire, according to Chief Luna. Riveros arrived to the scene and was also shot. Additional officers arrived and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was finally subdued. Wong was discovered down on a sidewalk and unresponsive. He died at the scene. The suspect remains hospitalized in stable condition. CityWatch Editor LOS ANGELES - A 22-year-old man accused of killing a Baldwin Park Police officer, wounding his partner and killing another man has been named. Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen was booked on suspicion of two counts of murder. He is in stable condition at a hospital pending transfer to a jail facility, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The shooting reportedly stemmed from a dispute over residential parking, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News. A housewarming party was underway in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue May 31. Medina allegedly confronted the man, who remains publicly unidentified, only described as a Pasadena man in his 40s. When the man didn’t park elsewhere, Medina allegedly shot and killed him. Baldwin Park Police officers Samuel Riveros and Anthony Pimentel went to the scene and were fired upon. Both were struck by gunfire. Riveros would not survive his wounds. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will soon file charges against Medina. Medina is being held in lieu of $4,000,000 bail. |
