CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A known gang member was jailed with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service, accused of brandishing a firearm. Two victims reported a man brandished a handgun at them near the Puente Avenue off ramp at the westbound I-10 freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. Investigators with the CHP Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team and U.S. Marshals identified and tracked down the suspect to West Covina. “During the arrest, officers recovered a loaded, unregistered firearm. The suspect, a self-admitted gang member, now faces multiple felony charges, according to the CHP Baldwin Park Office. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the suspect. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A trash dumpster provided a paltry hiding spot for a man who fled officers after allegedly brandishing a weapon May 1. Multiple witnesses reported an armed man near the offramp to the I-10 freeway at Puente Avenue around 7:48 a.m. Thursday. The man fled from arriving California Highway Patrol officers and sought refuge inside of a dumpster, according to the CHP Baldwin Park office. Officers from the CHP, Baldwin Park and West Covina Police departments surrounded the dumpster at a nearby McDonalds, 14530 Baldwin Park Towne Center. After more than one hour, the suspect surrendered, according to the CHP. A replica handgun was recovered and the suspect was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - Two suspects were tracked to Azusa and arrested March 4, accused of brandishing a firearm that turned out to be a replica, police said. The crime occurred outside Baldwin Park High School, 3900 N. Puente Ave. The student reported being approached by a vehicle with two individuals who brandished a firearm in a threatening manner, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The student safely walked back to the school for help. A vehicle and suspects were identified and after searching several locations, officers found the suspects in Azusa. Both the male and female suspects were followed and a high-risk traffic stop was made on Arrow Highway east of Azusa Canyon Road in Irwindale. A replica firearm was recovered, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Officers were called to the 3700 block of Maine Avenue to a family disturbance around 1:45 p.m.January 30. The suspect allegedly had a weapon and threatened his family. Officers evacuated the family. The suspect fled on foot, followed by police, and eventually to St. John the Baptist School, 3870 Stewart Ave., which was already locked down, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The suspect was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered, although police did not describe what the weapon was. When is his report of the man, who they initially believed, was carrying a gun, in the area of Ramona Blvd., and Foster Street around 1:45 p.m. January 30. Officers arrived to search the area and found the suspect who attempted to flee, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. After the suspect was detain, officers discovered that the weapon was a large dagger with a dark plastic handle. “Further investigation revealed that the male subject was also wanted for Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The male subject was booked at BPPD Jail for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and the unlawful carrying of a large dagger,” according to the Baldwin Park Police Department in a written statement. Baldwin Park police responded to the area of Los Angeles Street and Merced Avenue December 16 around 2:40 p.m. The suspect was seen fleeing a wanted vehicle, forcing officers to conduct a perimeter search to find him, according to Sgt. M. Balzano of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The suspect search was called off around 5 p.m. Although a suspect vehicle was recovered, the reported armed man was never located, neither was a weapon, Balzano told SGV CityWatch. Nearby Charles Bursch Elementary School, 4245 Merced Avenue was placed on lockdown during the search. Arturo Angel Duran, 23, was charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied vehicle, one count of negligent discharge of a firearm, three counts of child endangerment, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court information. The shooting occurred in the 14200 block of Cloverside Street. “During the investigation, officers learned the suspect, Arturo Duran (23 years), shot at his sister’s ex-boyfriend while his three daughters were seated in the back seat of the vehicle,” according to the Baldwin Park Police Department in a written statement. May 12, Baldwin Park Police located Duran with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force. Duran was residing in an area motel. Two women were staying with Duran at the time of the arrest. Stephanie Mendez, 25, was on probation and arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun. Vanessa Funston, 25 years, was arrested for an outstanding warrant, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Duran was arraigned on the charges May 16. He is being held in lieu of nearly $1.1 million bail at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic ahead of a scheduled appearance at Rio Hondo Municipal Court June 2. |
