CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A woman walking in freeway lanes was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene of the crash Wednesday. An unknown vehicle struck the woman who was walking northbound across the No. 1 lane of the westbound I-10 freeway west of White Avenue around 3:18 a.m. The woman was propelled into the No. 2 lane where another driver hit her, according to the CHP. The woman died at the scene. She has yet to be identified publicly. The second driver, who was behind the wheel of a 2006 GMC Savana, stayed at the scene. Westbound freeway lanes were closed just before 4 a.m. and were reopened just after 8 a.m. Anyone with information on the hit and run driver is urged to call California Highway Patrol Officer V. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A known gang member was jailed with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service, accused of brandishing a firearm. Two victims reported a man brandished a handgun at them near the Puente Avenue off ramp at the westbound I-10 freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park Office. Investigators with the CHP Baldwin Park Special Enforcement Team and U.S. Marshals identified and tracked down the suspect to West Covina. “During the arrest, officers recovered a loaded, unregistered firearm. The suspect, a self-admitted gang member, now faces multiple felony charges, according to the CHP Baldwin Park Office. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the suspect. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A suspect wanted for grand theft was finally arrested Friday after a dangerous pursuit ended in Baldwin Park. It is not immediately clear when the pursuit began, but El Monte Police officers took chase of a silver Honda Pilot on the I-10 freeway. They asked for assistance from the California Highway Patrol as the chase on the I-10 eastbound approached the 605 freeway around 9:12 p.m., according to CHP radio traffic. Law enforcement confirmed that the silver Honda Pilot was a wanted vehicle out of the San Gabriel Police Department. The driver is reportedly a known gang member, according to the El Monte Police Department. After the suspect went back westbound on the I-10 freeway, he transitioned to the southbound 605 freeway and often times drove in excess of 100 miles per hour. He grew bolder as the chase went on and somehow u-turned on the southbound 605 to travel northbound in southbound lanes near Whittier Boulevard. The CHP followed the suspect from the sky with officers on the ground backing off after he righted himself and exited onto Telegraph Road In Santa Fe Springs. He snaked his way northbound through city streets until he entered the 605 freeway northbound. CHP officers attempted to chase him again, but decided to back off once more as the suspect drove at excessive speeds, according to CHP radio traffic. The suspect exited onto surfer streets in Baldwin Park where he abandoned the Honda Pilot in the parking structure near Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center. A perimeter search was started and a CHP officer located and detained a suspect who was later identified by El Monte Police as Steven Anthony Amaya, 36. Amaya was arrested by San Gabriel Police. CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A known gang banger was jailed after leading Baldwin Park and El Monte Police officers on a pursuit into Montebello. The pursuit occurred January 24. The driver was allegedly driving recklessly through the streets of Baldwin Park and El Monte, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Officers pursued the driver on the ground and in the air into Montebello where the driver fled the vehicle near Montebello Towne Center. A brief foot pursuit ended with the arrest of Xavier Angel Mercado, 23. Mercado was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading police while on the wrong side of the median, evading with wanton disregard for public safety, possession of nitrous oxide and revocation of probation. Booking records appear to be incomplete for Mercado. Drivers reported a pedestrian walking with traffic between the number five lane in the shoulder around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, December 19. No description of the pedestrian has been given. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has yet to respond. First responders were called around 2 a.m., July 9 to a report of a sedan that overturned and landed on its roof. A motorcycle and possibly a black Mercedes-Benz were also involved in the crash, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The California Highway Patrol stopped all northbound lanes south of Valley Boulevard and diverted traffic to the west I-10 freeway. By 2:21 a.m., a request for an evidence tow was made. Two other people were hospitalized. By 6:16 a.m. Caltrans ended the full closure and northbound traffic was free to move again, according to the California Highway Patrol. It is not immediately clear what caused the crash. The California Highway Patrol is holding all lanes of the eastbound side while firefighters work to treat patients, two of which were pulled after being trapped in a vehicle. The northbound 605 transition to the east I-10 is also being held. All eastbound traffic is being diverted to the south 605, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP dispatchers were told of shots fired on the north 605 freeway south of the I-10 freeway around 9:40 a.m. Friday, April 7. The driver of the black SUV drove alongside a white Toyota Prius and fired one shot, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Prius fled off the freeway at Ramona Boulevard to a Mobil gas station, 12670 Ramona Blvd., and called 9-1-1. “CHP personnel located a single bullet round in the victim’s vehicle,” according to the California Highway Patrol in a written statement. The black SUV’s driver, described as a 20 to 30-Year-old Latino man in a black shirt and black hat, fled east on the I-10 freeway. Anyone with information on this shooting is urged to call CHP Officer D. Lauritzen, or Public Information Officer M. Lizzaraga at 323-980-4600. Dispatchers received a number of calls from drivers who saw the man standing on Baldwin Park Boulevard over the freeway just after 6 p.m. April 1. They were worried that he was going to jump. After a search, the man was found wounded on the eastbound offramp to Baldwin Park Boulevard, according to Sgt. Balzano of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The man suffered significant injuries. Balzano did not know what specific injuries the man received, only saying there was visible trauma. The man is reportedly in stable condition. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - Traffic is moving once again after investigators closed lanes of the I-10 freeway near Francisquito Avenue Saturday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle.
The pedestrian was killed on the eastbound I-10 freeway just west of Francisquito Avenue. CHP officers were first called to a report of a body in lanes at 4:39 a.m., according to Officer Moises Marroquín of the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Center. Initial reports provided to the California Highway Patrol indicated the pedestrian was walking casually across traffic lanes. The pedestrian was found dead in the slow lane. CHP officers briefly closed all eastbound lanes around 5:02 a.m. near the scene to establish a flare pattern. The HOV and No. 1 lanes of the eastbound I-10 freeway were soon opened to traffic. |
