Officers with the department’s Gang Activity Prevention unit attempted a traffic stop March 18 in the 3700 block of Baldwin Park Boulevard around 5 p.m. A passenger in the vehicle fled on foot, box in hand, and the driver sped away, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The passenger who fled on foot, 20-year-old Alfonso Maya, was caught and found in possession of two firearms. The brief vehicle pursuit ended in a solo crash at Live Oak Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard when the suspect struck a traffic light, according to Sgt. Mike Hemenway of the Baldwin Park Police Department. A gun clip and ammunition were reportedly recovered from the crashed vehicle. The driver, 20-year-old Izaac Velasco, and another passenger were taken to County/USC Medical Center for treatment. Velasco was eventually taken into custody and booked on suspicion of felony evading causing injury and evading in opposing lanes of traffic, Hemenway told SGV CityWatch. Maya was booked on suspicion of felony possession of a firearm, Hemenway told SGV CityWatch. Maya is being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail ahead of a scheduled appearance in Rio Hondo Municipal Court March 22. Velasco apparently remains hospitalized. His bail is set at $75,000, according to Los Angeles County booking records. Brandon Nagata , a 31-year-old Glendora man, was booked on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm on a peace officer, felony evading and driving on a suspended license, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol Baldwin Park office. Nagata was allegedly speeding westbound on the 60 freeway west of Grand Avenue around 1:08 a.m. Nagato refused to stop for officers and invaded police on the freeway, in excess of 120 mph and on surface streets at 80 miles per hour, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. The driver, later identified as Nagata, into a dead end on Stimson Avenue north of Valley Boulevard in city of industry. CHP officers use their patrol vehicles to box in Nagata into a chain link fence, Jimenez told SGV CityWatch. Nagata posted bond, according to Los Angeles County booking records. He is scheduled to appear in court February 4. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A man and woman were jailed November 12 after being caught riding in a stolen vehicle.
The unidentified driver fled the stolen vehicle before officers could stop him and before the vehicle could also stop. It crashed into a wall and during a foot pursuit, a Baldwin Park officer impaled his left leg on a wrought iron tine, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. Around 1:50 p.m., officers found a vehicle in the Walmart lot, 3250 Big Dalton Ave. The vehicle was reported stolen in Lakewood. During the foot pursuit, an officer had to climb a wrought iron fence to catch the suspect and that is when the officer injured himself, Baldwin Park Police said. The suspect was caught a short distance from the stolen vehicle. A female passenger remained in the vehicle and was arrested as well. She was issued a citation and released, Baldwin Park Police said. A firearm was found inside the vehicle. The injured officer was treated at the scene by paramedics and was hospitalized for further treatment. He was later released, Baldwin Park Police said. The unidentified suspects were arrested in the area of Baldwin Park Boulevard and Daum Drive in City of Industry near Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park. The driver of an older-model Honda Accord rammed through a chain link fence into the dirt shoulder of a flood control channel before stopping. One of the suspects ran a short distance before surrendering, according to Sgt. Andy Velebil of the Baldwin Park Police Department.
The car was reported stolen from West Covina. Baldwin Park officers located the stolen car around 7:22 p.m. at Francisquito Avenue and Maine Avenue, Velebil said. Baldwin Park Police with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol pursued the suspect onto the southbound 605 freeway at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The suspect exited onto Washington Boulevard and to South Bradwell Avenue in Whittier where the street ended. The suspect exited the vehicle just as it began to burn. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - An armed man was jailed Friday after fleeing officers after a brief chase and officer-involved shooting. The unidentified 20-year-old Baldwin Park man was riding shotgun in a stolen vehicle. Baldwin Park Police attempted to stop the driver who then led them on a chase, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The suspect fled the stolen vehicle on foot in the 13500 block of Tracy Street while armed. An officer-involved shooting occurred, Gonzalez said.
It is unclear if the suspect threatened the officers, necessitating a use of force. What became of the driver was unclear. The suspect hid inside an apartment complex on Tracy Street. About six apartment units were evacuated as a precaution while officers searched for the suspect, Gonzalez said. The suspect was located and arrested at 8:40 p.m. A weapon was recovered at the scene, Gonzalez said. The sergeant did not reveal the type of weapon recovered, but according to Baldwin Park Police radio traffic, a suspicious man at the complex was detained and found with a shotgun shell in one of his pockets. The suspect led police on a chase that lasted about four minutes and wound through surface streets in Baldwin Park -- through red lights and stop signs, according to Sgt. Joe Meister of the Baldwin Park Police Department. A Baldwin Park officer, who is also the station’s K9 unit, was on patrol and ran the license plate of a vehicle at Baldwin Park Boulevard and Francisquito Avenue around 10:43 p.m. The vehicle was reported stolen, Meister said. Towards the end of the chase, the suspect was southbound on Baldwin Park Boulevard at Foster Avenue when he collided into two parked vehicles. The suspect fled on foot, just as the pursuing officer unleashed his K9, Meister said. The K9 subdued the suspect, who was eventually taken to an area hospital to be medically cleared before booking at the Baldwin Park Police Department, Meister said. The green two-door Honda Civic was reported stolen from Montebello. A stolen handgun was also located inside the vehicle after the suspects stopped and surrendered to California Highway Patrol officers on the westbound 101 freeway in Agoura Hills at Reyes Adobe Road, according to Sgt. Jorge Huerta of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The pursuit began around 8:36 p.m. when the driver refused to stop for officers after committing a moving violation, Huerta said. During the beginning of the pursuit, Baldwin Park officers discovered the vehicle was stolen. The pursuit entered the northbound 605 freeway from northbound Los Angeles Street and then west on the 210 freeway. Officers cancelled the pursuit on the west 134 freeway at Lankershim Boulevard, Huerta said. The distance from Baldwin Park made radio communication difficult. As CHP officers were attempting to catch up to the driver, the stolen vehicle sideswiped a motorcyclist west on the 101 freeway. The rider briefly chased the driver during the pursuit. The 18-year-old driver was booked at the Baldwin Park jail. The 16-year-old boy was released to his parents, while the 17-year-old was taken to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey. The rider crashed into a vehicle while fleeing westbound on the 210 freeway east of Grand Avenue, sending the motorcyclist down pavement and the motorcycle skidding across freeway lanes. Officers attempted to stop the rider around 1:32 a.m. for speeding at Ramona Boulevard and Main Avenue, but the rider refused to stop, according to Sgt. Blackburn of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The rider led officers on a high-speed pursuit east on Badillo Street into San Dimas and east on Covina Boulevard. The pursuit entered the north 57 freeway and transitioned to the westbound 210 freeway where the crash occurred. “The rider was treated this morning at a local hospital and he was in stable condition,” Blackburn said. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. The unidentified man refused to stop for an officer who tried to pull him over for driving through a stop sign at Francisquito and Puente Avenue around 1:54 a.m. The suspect drove through Baldwin Park surface streets before entering La Puente, said Lt. Mark Adams of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The suspect continually circled the 13600 block of Nelson Avenue with Baldwin Park officers and a helicopter following him in La Puente. Officers knew he was ready to flee on foot as he shifted around in his vehicle, according to Baldwin Park Police radio traffic. The suspect then fled on foot and ran into a home after a woman opened the front door for him, according to Baldwin Park Police radio traffic. The suspect, identified as a La Puente-area gang member, was called out by officers until he and several others in the home surrendered, Adams said. Only the pursuit suspect was arrested. A report of the incident was not ready at the time this article was published. Booking information was not readily available. The suspect was booked on suspicion of felony evading, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license, Adams said. |
