Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - About five hours after a two-inch gas main was ruptured, residents were able to return home July 18. The gas main was ruptured in the area of East Olive Street and Edra Avenue around 2:18 p.m. Firefighters were dispatched at 2:20 p.m. No one was injured or hospitalized, according to Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Police evacuated Olive Street residents from Baldwin Park Boulevard to Stewart Avenue and evacuated some homes south of Olive on Edra Avenue. A temporary shelter was set up at nearby Holland Middle School, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department.
Firefighters sprayed a continuous stream of water on the spewing natural gas leak to prevent fire. Southern California Gas workers sealed the leak and by 7:15 p.m., residents were allowed back to their homes, Baldwin Park Police said. The crash, dispatched to firefighters at 9:58 p.m., occurred near Bresee Avenue and Los Angeles Street. Officers arrived on scene around 10:05 p.m. and began CPR on a patient in traumatic full arrest, according to Brian Stevens, inspector with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Around 10:08 p.m., firefighters reported the patient deceased, Stevens said. A Baldwin Park Police supervisor was unavailable to provide any other details on the crash. A passerby at the scene believed the patient was a bicyclist. |
