Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK – A police officer returned to work one day after being hospitalized for exposure to Fentanyl during a medical call September 22, Baldwin Park Police said. Police responded to a call of a woman slumped over the wheel of a parked vehicle in a residential neighborhood. Officers were able to wake the woman who, during the investigation, said there were drugs inside a small container picked up by one of the officers. “When the container was opened by one of the officers, he immediately became light-headed and dizzy. The woman told officers the narcotics were methamphetamine, heroin, and Fentanyl,” according to the Baldwin Park Police Department in a written statement.
Paramedics treated the officer on scene and took him to be hospitalized for narcotics exposure, Baldwin Park Police said. “Due to COVID-19, the woman was booked in the field on charges of possession of controlled substances. She was issued a citation and immediately released with a court date in the near future,” Baldwin Park Police said. The unidentified suspect, also accused of attempting to burn down a church, was subdued after throwing the incendiary devices at police, one of which ignited an officer’s patrol vehicle, Baldwin Park Police said in a written statement. Officers originally responded to Monterey Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard around 8 a.m. to investigate the assault and found evidence of a failed attempt at arson, Baldwin Park Police said. The suspect was found in a residential rear yard, armed with lit Molotov Cocktails. He advanced towards them and threw them at police. After the suspect was subdued, a resident extinguished the burning patrol vehicle with a garden hose, Baldwin Park Police said. Police later took the suspect into custody. The man was sought in the shootout in a parking lot at Kaiser Permanente - Baldwin Park September 2. Police located and arrested the man in the 13100 block of Amar Road with help from community members who reported seeing a possible suspect in the area, Baldwin Park Police said. The suspect’s name is not being released yet due to the ongoing investigation, according to Sgt. Gamboa of the Baldwin Park Police Department. Gamboa added that the only crime the suspect was booked on at this time is for a parole violation. “He hasn’t been formally charged with anything else, because the investigation is still ongoing,” Gamboa told SGV CityWatch. One man wounded in the shootout drove himself to a different hospital where he was eventually intercepted by police. It is unclear if the second shooter was wounded since he escaped as well, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department.
