Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor BALDWIN PARK - A police K9 took a bite out of crime when he subdued a chase suspect who fled on foot after crashing Monday night.
The suspect led police on a chase that lasted about four minutes and wound through surface streets in Baldwin Park -- through red lights and stop signs, according to Sgt. Joe Meister of the Baldwin Park Police Department. A Baldwin Park officer, who is also the station’s K9 unit, was on patrol and ran the license plate of a vehicle at Baldwin Park Boulevard and Francisquito Avenue around 10:43 p.m. The vehicle was reported stolen, Meister said. Towards the end of the chase, the suspect was southbound on Baldwin Park Boulevard at Foster Avenue when he collided into two parked vehicles. The suspect fled on foot, just as the pursuing officer unleashed his K9, Meister said. The K9 subdued the suspect, who was eventually taken to an area hospital to be medically cleared before booking at the Baldwin Park Police Department, Meister said. The green two-door Honda Civic was reported stolen from Montebello. The victim was found shot in the 4200 block of La Rica Avenue around 2 p.m. after officers responded to the location. The man was hospitalized and later died, according Deputy Armando Viera Jr. of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. There is no suspect description available. Officers responded to a shooting in the 12900 block of Garvey Avenue November 13 around 5:44 p.m. As officers arrived, a man was seen fleeing the area, Baldwin Park Police said in a written statement. A short time after officers responded, a man wound up in a nearby hospital, suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to an arm, Baldwin Park Police said. A suspect description was not provided.
