The unidentified 20-year-old Baldwin Park man was riding shotgun in a stolen vehicle. Baldwin Park Police attempted to stop the driver who then led them on a chase, according to Sgt. Gonzalez of the Baldwin Park Police Department. The suspect fled the stolen vehicle on foot in the 13500 block of Tracy Street while armed. An officer-involved shooting occurred, Gonzalez said.
It is unclear if the suspect threatened the officers, necessitating a use of force. What became of the driver was unclear. The suspect hid inside an apartment complex on Tracy Street. About six apartment units were evacuated as a precaution while officers searched for the suspect, Gonzalez said. The suspect was located and arrested at 8:40 p.m. A weapon was recovered at the scene, Gonzalez said. The sergeant did not reveal the type of weapon recovered, but according to Baldwin Park Police radio traffic, a suspicious man at the complex was detained and found with a shotgun shell in one of his pockets. The shooting was reported around 8:55 p.m. in the 15000 block of Olive Street. The adult male was the victim declared dead at the scene. The male juvenile was hospitalized in unknown condition, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. While Sheriff’s Homicide detectives state the suspects are unknown, early reports from the scene indicate at least one suspect in a truck yelled something at the victims before or after the gunfire. Baldwin Park officers canvassed the scene with the aid of Irwindale Police to search for either witnesses or additional victims. No other information is available. The robbery occurred at 7:30 p.m. at MetroPCS, 14461 Merced Ave., December 18. The suspects entered the store and took the phones by show of force, according to Lt. Mark Adams of the Baldwin Park Police Department. A black semi-automatic handgun gun was used, according to a Baldwin Park Police crime broadcast. The armed suspect is a Hispanic man in his early 20s and is 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin build. He wore a red and green beanie, grey hoodie and black jeans. The second suspect is a Hispanic man, 18 to 19 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and has a medium build. He wore a grey hoodie and brown khaki pants. Sergio Cardenas, 56, was booked in the Baldwin Park jail December 16 and is held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Cardenas is accused of clipping a curb in a crash that ejected his passenger onto the road, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department. The collision occurred around 5 p.m. at Dalewood Street and Francisquito Avenue December 16. Police identified the female passenger as Luz Urias, 57. Cardenas suffered leg pain in the crash, Baldwin Park Police said. The shooting took place around 7:20 p.m. in the 3300 block of Mangum Street. The man was found shot in his right leg, right hand and groin, according to Sgt. Shawn Blackburn of the Baldwin Park Police Department. Police were summoned to the area on a report of gunshots heard. The injured man was found in the street. He said he did not know the suspects, Blackburn said. The man was unable to provide suspect descriptions. A black truck was seen driven away from the area. The collision was reported around 7:45 p.m. to firefighters at Main and Foster avenues. The person killed was found around 8 p.m., quite a distance away from where the train stopped, according to Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The pedestrian was apparently struck away from a crossing, according to Metrolink officials. The collision impacted service on train No. 372 bound for San Bernardino. No other injuries were reported. The 50-year-old son and 73-year-old mother were found dead inside the home by responding Baldwin Park officers after being initially called for a medical response to the 3900 block of Kenmore Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Detectives are not looking for a suspect and it is unknown if the deaths are criminal in nature. Relatives inside the home called firefighters after finding the 50-year-old victim unresponsive around 4:42 a.m. Firefighters were dispatched to a cardiac arrest call at the home, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Officers found the dead mother in a separate room. “Neither victim appeared to suffer any traumatic injury,” according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
