The crash occurred Saturday, June 18 at 3:18 a.m. in the 16000 block of East Arrow Highway near the Civic Commerce Center. The driver slammed into a corner of the building, destroying the windows and much of the office interior. “Officers contacted the driver of the pick-up truck at the scene, who miraculously was not injured in the collision. He was, however, found to be intoxicated and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement. Nicholas Anthony Hernandez, 26, was booked and eventually released on citation pending a court date, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The office was red-tagged for inspection. A big rig hauling 22,000 pounds of freight crashed into another large vehicle, possibly a garbage truck or street sweeper, just after 5 a.m. June 20. A wrecker tow truck has been called for the semi with major front end damage, according to the California Highway Patrol. Irwindale Police were called to investigate reports of impatient driver exiting the wrong way onto Arrow Highway. The collision was reported around 7:34 a.m. on the westbound 210 freeway at the southbound 605 freeway. A motorcyclist died in the HOV lane after apparently colliding with a black BMW SUV, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. An off-duty firefighter reportedly stopped to assist with the crash and preliminarily determined that the rider was deceased at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs. The HOV and No. 1 lane remain blocked for westbound lanes of the 210 freeway at the 605. Los Angeles man Talsa Garron Walker, 39, allegedly refused for 30 minutes to provide identification to verify his driving status during a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Buena Vista Street around 11:07 p.m. Walker allegedly resisted arrest and fled, according to the Irwindale Police Department. “He broke away from the officers and then sped away from the scene in the Honda, leading the officers on an approximate 1.5 mile high speed pursuit through the city of Irwindale,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement. Walker crashed through a chain link fence at Alpha Street west of Avenida Barbosa, launched the Honda into the flood control channel and crashed. Walker allegedly continued to flee, on foot this time, for about one mile before being hit with a stun gun while resisting in the 200 block of Longden Avenue, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Walker was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Firefighters and later hospitalized before being booked on suspicion of felony evading, resisting arrest with violence, a number of vehicle code violations and an outstanding warrant, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Walker is being held in lieu of $135,000 bail in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility ahead of a scheduled appearance in the West Covina Courthouse March 22, according to Los Angeles County booking information. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE - A passerby’s curiosity led to the discovery of a fatal crash last week and the rescue of the driver, police said. Investigators are still determining the cause of the crash after a vehicle sped through the intersection of Cypress Street and Azusa Canyon Road February 20. The westbound vehicle hopped the sidewalk, crashed through a metal barrier, chain link fence and into a mine. The vehicle descended about 180 feet into the mine after flying across an access road and landing on a berm. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver extricated himself and attempted to climb to the bottom of the quarry, according to Sgt. Rudy Gatto of the Irwindale Police Department. The passenger killed, 25-year-old Ontario man Isaac Lefebre, was identified by Sarah Ardalani, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner A driver happened to see a gaping hole in the chain-link fence around 2:30 a.m. and found the crash. Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed the collision actually occurred around 1:16 a.m., Gatto told SGV CityWatch. The Olive Pit Mine, where the crash occurred, was closed at the time of the crash. Other Irwindale quarries do run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Gatto told SGV CityWatch. The day after the crash, the Irwindale Police Department requested the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas Station Mountain Rescue Team with repelling down the side of the mine to recover evidence. It is not yet clear if alcohol, drugs, or street racing contributed to the crash. An estimated 141 customers remain without power near the crash that occurred on eastbound Arrow Highway at Gayhurst Street around 4:26 p.m. February 21. A 2019 grey Kia sedan being driven eastbound on Arrow Highway struck a 2016 Ford pickup truck that was turning south from westbound Arrow to Gayhurst Street. The Kia then struck a power pole, according to the Irwindale Police Department. The driver of the Kia died at the scene. His female passenger was extricated from the vehicle and taken by helicopter to a trauma center. The driver of the Ford truck was uninjured and spoke with investigators. “SCE crews are currently on-scene to restore power and to repair the damaged utility pole. This work is expected to take 24-hours to complete,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a statement posted at 1:42 a.m. It is unclear if alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the crash. The crash near East Cypress Street and North Azusa Canyon Road around 2:46 a.m. killed one person at the scene. One person was taken to a trauma center, according to Dispatch Supervisor Diaz of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The Irwindale Police Department had traffic redirected during a collision investigation. The closure was lifted at 6 a.m. The Irwindale Police Department has not yet returned a call for details on what may have led to a crash. The crash occurred at Arrow Highway and Vincent Avenue around 2 p.m. The suspect 38-year-old Gabriela Reyes, fled her Ford F-150 on foot after the crash, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Two people were hospitalized. “Using information from witnesses and obtained during their investigation, our detectives identified the driver who left the scene,” according to the Irwindale Police Department in a written statement. Due to the county's "zero bail" policy, she was later released with a citation to appear in court, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor IRWINDALE – A man accused of stealing his girlfriend’s vehicle after assaulting her was arrested after evading Industry Station deputies into Irwindale Tuesday. The suspect, identified as Anthony Cole, alleged shoved and punched his girlfriend of several years and her juvenile daughter. He fled in the girlfriend’s vehicle, which was located on Baldwin Park Boulevard in the City of Industry area. Deputies attempted to stop the driver, according to Lt. David Petrocelli of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. A pursuit began at eastbound Live Oak Avenue at Arrow Highway in Irwindale. “As the suspect entered the intersection of Azusa Canyon Road and Los Angeles Street in the City of Irwindale the suspect collided with another driver turning left in the intersection,” Petrocelli told SGV CityWatch. A chain reaction collision occurred. Three other vehicles were struck and the stolen vehicle rolled over. The suspect, identified by deputies as Cole extricated himself from the wreck and briefly fled on foot before being arrested, Petrocelli told SGV CityWatch. Los Angeles County Firefighters were dispatched at 1:36 p.m. The collision left a mess of twisted vehicles strewn across railroad tracks used by Metrolink and Union Pacific Railroad, necessitating train traffic to hault, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Cole submitted to a mandatory medical clearance prior to being booked, according to Sgt. Fitch of the Sheriff’s Industry Station. There were no serious injuries. Irwindale Police traffic investigators are handling the collision investigation, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Joscelyne Christine Flores, a Covina resident, is accused of causing the vehicle she drove to jump a couple of raised islands, forcing it to plow through the roll-up door of Royal Oaks Custom Paint and Body, 14314 Arrow Hwy., late Monday. The collision and ensuing fire caused extensive damage to not only the building, but several customers’ vehicles, according to the Irwindale Police Department. Flores was briefly hospitalized and later booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. Flores was issued a citation and released, according to Los Angeles County booking records. |
