ALHAMBRA – A man suspected of driving under the influence was pulled from his burning vehicle after a crash October 20.
First responders arrived to the 700 block of North Atlantic Avenue around 2 a.m. Thursday and found the vehicle already on fire. Officers pulled the driver out of the vehicle and walked him to safety, according to the Alhambra Police Department.
“The driver of the vehicle showed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A blood sample was obtained from the driver and this case will ultimately be presented to the LA District Attorney’s Office for review of DUI charges,” according to the Alhambra Police Department in a written statement. One officer was treated and released for smoke inhalation. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - The cause of a fire that destroyed three attached garages and left three apartment units uninhabitable is being investigated. The fire burned at 777 E. Valley Blvd. September 22. Firefighters were dispatched at 5:44 p.m. Firefighters immediately began attacking the fire while other firefighters began checking apartment units for extension of flames, according to Battalion Chief Doug Shonkwiler of the Alhambra Fire Department.
The fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes, Shonkwiler said. There was only minimal extension into an apartment unit. Several people at the scene were treated for lightheadedness. Shonkwiler did not know yet a dollar amount in damage to the structures and contents. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - Firefighters extinguished a commercial structure fire at the same building twice November 22. Firefighters responded at 11:40 p.m. Thanksgiving night to extinguish a large fire at the two-story structure, 924 E. Main St. and requested a 2nd-alarm response to knock down the flames, according to the Alhambra Fire Department. Heavy flames already pierced the roof by the time firefighters arrived on scene.
The same building caught fire at 1:42 p.m. Thanksgiving day. Alhambra Police officers redirected traffic away from the scene. All lanes were temporarily shut down, but reopened at 5 a.m. Friday. The three-alarm fire sparked in a palm tree on Hidalgo Avenue around 5:21 p.m. Embers carried by the winds spread to the roof of a nearby structure, igniting and destroying the garages. No injuries were reported. There was no immediate word on the fire’s cause. |
