CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - Police shot and killed a reported suicidal man who allegedly charged at them with a knife Saturday. The shooting occurred in the 1200 block of South Almansor Avenue January 18. Police originally responded around 11:18 a.m. to a call of a suicidal man, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The man emerged from nearby, a knife in hand and advanced toward Alhambra Police officers. “Officers gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect did not comply with the officers commands and continued to advance toward the officers in an aggressive manner when an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. The man was struck multiple times. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Investigators recovered a large knife at the scene. The incident was reported at 5:37 a.m. at South Meridian Avenue and West Commonwealth Avenue Thursday, October 26 near Emery Park Elementary School. The suspect, only described as an adult male, was hospitalized. His condition is not immediately known. “Due to active law enforcement investigation on Commonwealth & Meridian. The incident did NOT occur on campus,” according to the Alhambra Unified School District. Emery Park Elementary School is closed Thursday and is expected to open October 27. The circumstances leading to the shooting are not immediately clear. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - Two women in their 20s were detained after crashing during a high-speed chase, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said Sunday. The women were contacted by an Alhambra Police officer at a storage facility on the 2000 block of West Mission Road January 5 around 3:30 a.m. for a burglary investigation. The driver of a vehicle allegedly accelerated at an Alhambra officer, forcing the officer to open fire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The driver was struck in an extremity. She crashed while turning south onto Sixth Street and struck a retaining wall, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said.
It appeared a storage unit at the facility was burglarized, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said. The passenger was injured in the crash. Both suspects, only described as Hispanic women, were hospitalized for their injuries. The crash occurred in the area of West Mission Road and South Sixth Street around 3:30 a.m. January 5. Alhambra Police could not provide more details. The investigation is now being handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The woman wounded by gunfire received a injury considered not life threatening, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No officers were injured. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are en route to investigate the police shooting, according to Deputy Michelle Sanchez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The exact sequence of events of the incident are not publicly known yet. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - An officer received minor injuries after a domestic violence suspect got into two confrontations with police Saturday, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The suspect, 46-year-old Juan Gabriel Miranda, was taken into custody with the use of less than lethal rounds when he briefly barricaded himself in his vehicle after the second police shooting, according to the Alhambra Police Department. No police officers, nor Miranda, were hit by gunfire. Officers were called to the 1900 block of South Primrose Avenue at 8:35 p.m. December 28 for a domestic violence investigation. Miranda drove away from the scene before officers arrived, but returned several minutes later. “Officers gave orders to the suspect to stop and exit his vehicle. A gunshot was heard as the suspect fled in the direction of officers, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred,” Alhambra Police Sergeant Edward Elizalde said in a written statement.
Miranda fled in his vehicle again and returned once more. A second police shooting occurred and Miranda briefly barricaded himself inside his vehicle until bean bag rounds were used to force Miranda to surrender, Elizalde said. Miranda was given a medical examination to clear him for booking in the Alhambra Police jail on suspicion of felony charges related to the domestic violence and assault charges on the officers, Elizalde said. |
