CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA - Police shot and killed a reported suicidal man who allegedly charged at them with a knife Saturday. The shooting occurred in the 1200 block of South Almansor Avenue January 18. Police originally responded around 11:18 a.m. to a call of a suicidal man, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The man emerged from nearby, a knife in hand and advanced toward Alhambra Police officers. “Officers gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect did not comply with the officers commands and continued to advance toward the officers in an aggressive manner when an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the Sheriff’s Department in a written statement. The man was struck multiple times. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Investigators recovered a large knife at the scene. The incident was reported at 5:37 a.m. at South Meridian Avenue and West Commonwealth Avenue Thursday, October 26 near Emery Park Elementary School. The suspect, only described as an adult male, was hospitalized. His condition is not immediately known. “Due to active law enforcement investigation on Commonwealth & Meridian. The incident did NOT occur on campus,” according to the Alhambra Unified School District. Emery Park Elementary School is closed Thursday and is expected to open October 27. The circumstances leading to the shooting are not immediately clear. Officers responded to a gunfire call just before 9:30 p.m. to South Almansor Street and East Bay Street. They found a Black man in his 40s with gunshot wounds to his upper torso and still alive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies near the I-10 freeway and Fremont Avenue attempted to stop the vehicle around 7:44 p.m. after learning it was stolen. The driver led police on a chase along surface streets into Alhambra, according to Lt. Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Temple Station. Deputies ended the chase after losing sight of the vehicle. Deputies were soon notified that a man and woman were seen running in the area of North Bushnell Avenue and Larch Street, but a perimeter search was fruitless. The stolen vehicle information revealed whoever took the ride was considered armed and dangerous, Hernandez told SGV CityWatch. Alhambra Police officers responded to multiple calls of gunfire and a gunshot victim in the 400 block of North Atlantic Boulevard around 6:13 p.m. They found a Latino man with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Alhambra Firefighter paramedics declared him dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It is not publicly clear if Homicide investigators determined a motive or have identified a suspect. Alhambra officers were called to a reported shooting at Edgewood Avenue and Valley Boulevard around 7:30 a.m. Saturday and found evidence a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting occurred. An unoccupied vehicle struck by gunfire was found at Marengo Avenue and Valley Boulevard, according to the Alhambra Police Department. “Subsequently, a victim was located at a nearby residence. The victim was not struck by the gunfire. After reviewing video surveillance in the area of both shootings, a suspect vehicle was identified. APD Detectives placed a ‘want’ on the suspect vehicle while the investigation continued,” according to the Alhambra Police Department in a written statement. Around Noon February 28, Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lakewood Station pursued the suspect after he was found in Bellflower. The pursuit ended in Costa Mesa near Victoria Street and Newport Boulevard with a brief foot chase with the armed suspect who allegedly attempted to carjack a driver before being arrested. Written by AARON CASTREJON CityWatch Editor ALHAMBRA – Theft suspects from an Alhambra Target store could not outrun a helicopter tracking them as they fled on the I-10 freeway and as they fled on foot Monday.
The unnamed trio are accused of thieving $1,000 in goods from Target, 2120 W. Main St. January 4. Police were called at 9:30 p.m. to find the thieves who were already fleeing in a vehicle, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Patrol officers located the fleeing vehicle at Fremont Street and Poplar Boulevard. The driver refused to stop, according to the Alhambra Police Department. A pursuit took to Los Angeles and nearby freeways. Alhambra officers pursued the suspects on the I-10 freeway as far as Santa Anita Avenue until they decided to allow a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter to safely track the suspects from the air. The suspects fled east at high speed as far as Hacienda Heights after merging onto the 60 freeway. They quickly fled back west. The driver stopped after exiting the westbound 60 freeway at Potrero Grande Drive in Monterey Park. All three suspects began their escape on foot, but surrendered as the helicopter and Monterey Park Police officers descended on them. A 21-year-old man from Los Angeles, a 24-year-old man from Long Beach and a 22-year-old woman from Los Angeles were booked on suspicion of robbery, felony evading and for outstanding warrants on previous crimes committed, according to the Alhambra Police Department. Angel Gandara allegedly attempted to shoot a 20-year-old man he was arguing with in the 400 block of South First Street at 9 p.m. Thursday. The bullet missed his intended victim, pierced a wall and struck a woman believed to be in her 50s. She suffered a wound to her arm, according to the Alhambra police Department. Officers conducting surveillance in the 100 block of South Granada Avenue, January 21 found Gandara at a residence. He reportedly refused to comply with orders to surrender and barricaded himself inside the residence. Alhambra officers requested the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau at 11 p.m. At 5:42 a.m. January 22, sheriff’s deputies breached the residence and eventually located Gandara hiding in the attic. Alhambra police officers arrested him. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Tuesday, January 26. County booking information for Gandara was not readily available. Shu Chao, 71, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Chao was declared missing by her daughter January 15. Chao was last seen around 10:30 p.m. the previous night. Chao suffered from other medical issues, authorities said. Officers arriving to check on the welfare of a woman down on the ground near the Alhambra Golf Course, 630 S. Almansor St., January 17 found her unconscious near an access road to the flood control channel. She was declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Chao’s cause of death has been deferred pending additional investigation. Officers arriving to check on the woman’s welfare near the Alhambra Golf Course, 603 S. Almansor St., January 17 found her unconscious near an access road to the flood control channel. She was declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Her cause of death was not immediately apparent, deputies said. “Investigators believe the victim may be a woman reported missing from San Gabriel in recent days,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. “At this time, the victim has not been positively identified and her name will not be released pending that identification by the coroner and notification to her family.” Anyone with information on this death is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
