Sam Nhat Do, 42, was charged with two counts of homicide with special circumstances and one count of child endangerment, Alhambra Police said January 28. Do is accused of gunning down Cuong Nhat Do, a 44-year-old man, and Camha Nguyen Do, a 38-year-old woman, in an apartment unit in the 400 block of North Second Street January 24 around 7:14 p.m. Officers responding to a gunfire call found both victims inside the apartment. CPR was administered before time of death was called at 7:26 p.m. Do is being accused of child endangerment because a juvenile was inside the apartment unit at the time of the shooting, Alhambra Police said.
Do flagged down an officer responding to the scene and reportedly confessed to the murders. According to Alhambra Police radio traffic, Do told officers where to find the weapon used. A police helicopter equipped with a heat vision camera located the weapon. A motive has not been determined. Cuong Nhat Do, a 44-year-old man, and Camha Nguyen Do, a 38-year-old woman, were identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. They both resided in Anaheim. The murder suspect was identified as 42-year-old Sam Nhat Do of Alhambra. He was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. Shu Chao, 71, was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Chao was declared missing by her daughter January 15. Chao was last seen around 10:30 p.m. the previous night. Chao suffered from other medical issues, authorities said. Officers arriving to check on the welfare of a woman down on the ground near the Alhambra Golf Course, 630 S. Almansor St., January 17 found her unconscious near an access road to the flood control channel. She was declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Chao’s cause of death has been deferred pending additional investigation. Officers arriving to check on the woman’s welfare near the Alhambra Golf Course, 603 S. Almansor St., January 17 found her unconscious near an access road to the flood control channel. She was declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Her cause of death was not immediately apparent, deputies said. “Investigators believe the victim may be a woman reported missing from San Gabriel in recent days,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau in a written statement. “At this time, the victim has not been positively identified and her name will not be released pending that identification by the coroner and notification to her family.” Anyone with information on this death is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. The women were contacted by an Alhambra Police officer at a storage facility on the 2000 block of West Mission Road January 5 around 3:30 a.m. for a burglary investigation. The driver of a vehicle allegedly accelerated at an Alhambra officer, forcing the officer to open fire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The driver was struck in an extremity. She crashed while turning south onto Sixth Street and struck a retaining wall, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said.
It appeared a storage unit at the facility was burglarized, Sheriff’s homicide investigators said. The passenger was injured in the crash. Both suspects, only described as Hispanic women, were hospitalized for their injuries. The crash occurred in the area of West Mission Road and South Sixth Street around 3:30 a.m. January 5. Alhambra Police could not provide more details. The investigation is now being handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The woman wounded by gunfire received a injury considered not life threatening, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No officers were injured. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are en route to investigate the police shooting, according to Deputy Michelle Sanchez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
